Dog tired, in the best way
The bad news is that I just had to leave Penny at the vet. We had a nice long walk over there and I gave Penny a cheerful, “Be right back!” before I left. But now that Penny’s out of sight I can drop the act and let my anxiety run free.
Yes, I know how routine a spay surgery is. Yes, I have a great vet. No, none of that stops me from worrying. Can’t help myself. So instead I’m trying to think about how I’m going to spoil the little punk when I pick her up.
I promise we’ll throw a welcome home party like no other
I promise there will be plenty of treats
Eko and I promise to give her the best spot on the couch
And most of all I promise to help Penny heal up and get back to what she does best – cause trouble!
A spay is a routine procedure for a vet, and nervousness is the routine procedure on my end. Now I just need my phone to ring so I can go play the hero and bring my little pup back home where she belongs!
I’ll post a full update on the patient tomorrow morning.

Yep, it’s your job — nervousness. I will admit to bursting into tears when the vet told me she had to keep Dash overnight (he was having digestive problems and something was blocking him). I knew he would be safe, I knew it was the right thing and I knew he would be ready for me the next day. But I wept! It was a little embarrassing but I couldn’t help it! So, be nervous old man, be anxious and on edge until that phone call. It’s what happens when these buggers steal our hearts!
Lol re little punk. Will, you are an amazing dad. When I had to get Alex spayed, I am not lying about this, I kept looking at my watch every few minutes and I was not ok until I picked her up. I know how you feel.
I agree… I would be as nervous as a box of frogs too… And I know everything goes well and your little punk is back at home soon…. and I bet she is ready for the great party soon :o)
It is sweet that you are worried. I bet Eko’d be up for a distraction/adventure:) probably make it easier when she comes home too. Speaking of… I need to get up and go use my hands free:)
i did the same thing – don’t worry she will be ok – but yeah i paced at home until i could pick her up and then when i did she looked so well…operated-on…and she was just so happy to see me that i almost cried…….Penny will be ok but feel free to pace to get rid of your anxiety – it will make you part of the puppy pacing club -all of us who take our pets to the vet for routine or otherwise surgery
She’ll be fine. Anytime we need to leave them at the vet, I’m a complete nut case. Even with the non anesthesia teeth cleaning!!
She’ll be so happy to see you when she gets to go home. Eko will be relieved that his sister came back. Just keeping her down for the next couple of days should be challenging, she is who she is 🙂
Give her an extra cuddle from us. And a few extra treats!
Will: I understand the feeling! I am a veterinarian myself, but when I had to leave my RR girl a few years back for her op, I was a mess! I was recovering at the time from a hysterectomy myself so I could well understand what my baby girl was in for, but believe me she bounced back a hell of a lot quicker than I did! Too quickly in fact, which presented the challenge of minimising the rambunctious play with her 2 RR older brothers.
Penny it will be okay. I’ve been there. You’ll be running again in no time. Have a good rest.

Surgery of any kind is overwhelming — it’s like flying, we have no control. Hoping the phone rings soon and you have your good news and your girl is back in your arms soon.
you are such a fabulous pet parent! I am the same, the second they are dropped off (even when it is a routine grooming appt) I worry and am nervous. I am certain Penny is going to be the “Queen of her Castle” when she returns home. She couldn’t be in better hands with you and Emily and in better paws with the-patience-of-a-Saint “Mr.Eko” (((hugs))))
I know the feeling that it’s routine until it happens to YOU and yours.
Some pets take it in stride, and other have a hard time shaking off the anesthesia. I hope that Penny is the former, not the latter. I just had my newest cat neutered last week, so the anxiety is fresh in my mind. Good luck to you all. I’m sure Eko is more than willing to comfort you!
Pawsitive thoughts going your way! I’m sure Penny will be home soon and recovery will be swift. She’s a good, healthy dog and has a great family to come home to!
With any luck Penny will be a little groggy when you pick her up and will take a nap when she gets home……….then when she’s FULLY AWAKE she’ll wake in her own bed with her brother and parents there and be the wiggly-tailed girl she always is – only just a little bit sore!

Yep, I’m just like you – no amount of logic stopped my anxiety either. We all had such a hard time when the vet took Daisy from us for her spay surgery, and we felt horrible the whole drive home, all night, and the next day (they kept her there overnight and the next day). Daisy had a difficult time with her recovery, but that’s more of a small dog thing. Our last dog was 60 pounds, and she skated through recovery – we’d never have known she even had surgery except that she sat in a funny position for a while. 🙂 I think Penny will come through like the tough gal she is.
Your concern is so sweet and adorable. Everything will be just fine but know Sam and I have our paws crossed that YOU survive–we KNOW Penny will come through just fine. 🙂
As you can see from above you’re not alone with your anxiety. I’m exactly the same with our boys no matter what the reason for going to the vet. I do my best not to transfer those fears to the boys and make it a fun experience and of course cuddles, cuddles, cuddles at the end. I know Penny will be fine and this is the best thing for her for her future. Snuggles from us for the brave girl when she’s back home.
Hope the little stinker has a good surgery!! Is Eko looking for her or is he glad to have a few quiet hours??
Well you’re already one step ahead of us when we had Zoey spayed – you have a good vet!
Our vet was terrible; he gave us no aftercare advice (we had never had a dog neutered before) even though we sat waiting for him, he didn’t advise us when we could walk Zoey, what activities she could do, and worst of all he didn’t give us any pain meds for her! (we phoned and got into an argument the next day and they gave us some)
I remember when Kasper needed an op when he cut his artery, I’d never left a dog at a vet before and once we were outside and out of Kasper’s hearing I burst into tears!! It’s heartbreaking leaving them there, but it’s for the best 🙂
Penny’s spay will go fine, and she’s lucky to have you three to look after her…the hardest part, as I’ll bet you know, is gonna be keeping her still enough for recovery – good luck! 😀

My mom is the same way. Even though there is almost no risk, she always thinks her case may be that small percentage. She will be fine and back to normal far too soon!

Wondering if your vet discussed or offered you the gastropexy procedure; supposedly great for dogs who can bloat, as it can lower the incidence by suturing the stomach to the abdominal wall to keep it from ‘twisting’, which can ‘kink’ the larger blood vessels. A friend of mine is a vet & suggested the procedure. Kinda’ like to know what your vet says/said about it!?!
Hang in there when Penny gets home; challenging I know keeping a large dog “down” during her recovery! And, ask about using Benadryl too after pain meds are gone to aid in taking things down a notch so she doesn’t rough house post-sx!

Having read today’s post I’m so glad all went well! I was so worried about Boca’s eye surgery – it makes me nervous every time, routine or no. GA is a big deal for dogs and humans!
Just the thought of surgery makes me tired
