Penny’s Home!

I dropped Penny at the vet yesterday morning around 8:30 am for pre-op care for her spay. Around noon I got a call from the vet. “I’M ON MY WAY!” I said, bombing down my apartment steps. “…uh, the surgery hasn’t started, we’re just calling to double check Penny is
I dropped Penny at the vet yesterday morning around 8:30 am for pre-op care for her spay. Around noon I got a call from the vet. “I’M ON MY WAY!” I said, bombing down my apartment steps. “…uh, the surgery hasn’t started, we’re just calling to double check Penny is microchipped…” Ok, so maybe I was a tad anxious to go get my girl. It seemed like an eternity had passed when I finally got the call at 5pm that the surgery went well and Penny was doing just fine. At the vet’s office, a groggy Penny used up all her energy burying herself in my lap and wagging her tail at somewhere near the speed of sound.

Back at home, we had a cuddle pile for our brave patient

As expected, Penny conked out hard

This morning I found the pups curled up like this. Penny had 1.75 beds and Eko had 0.25 beds. Eko was kind enough to let the little patient have whatever she wanted

It’s been a while since I’ve had a pup have surgery, so I was surprised when Penny didn’t come home with a cone. (Wish I had known that before I went and bought markers/stickers to decorate…)

I’m not sure if the vet thinks Penny needs to catch some z’s on a flight, or maybe the vet wanted Penny to have a flotation device in the event my apartment crashes into Lake Michigan? But with her fancy post-op collar, Penny is prepared for either scenario.

Penny was understandably even more confused about it that I was

But you can call me Willy Wonka because I was giving out treats left and right

“I still don’t know what this thing on my neck is, but as long as the treats keep coming, I don’t care.”

Thanks to Dr. Baker and the awesome team at Blum Animal Hospital, Penny is safe and sound. We here at the Marking Our Territory recovery clinic are going to make sure the little troublemaker is back on her paws in no time.

And thanks to everyone who commented on yesterday’s post. The comments definitely helped keep my worried mind from wandering too far!

Comments for Penny’s Home!

Welcome home, Penny! We’re happy to see that cute face on our screens again. Oh, and that funky thing around your neck is definitely an advanced way of keeping you from your stitches while preventing bonking into all the walls and having trouble eating and drinking while confined to a cone. We have one of those tucked away from a previous surgery and it worked really well! Also makes an awesome doggie neck pillow.

  2. I love those soft-sided cones–they’re so much easier for canine patients to maneuver through doorways and around the water & food bowls (thought it looks like Penny will gladly take all the hand feeding). I’ll resist the “I told you” part about Penny doing just fine. 😉 Enjoy pampering your little princess especially while you can keep her close and safe. Soon enough she’ll be off dashing along the beachfront running with the big dogs.

  3. T&S says:

What kind of surgery was it (standard or laparascopy)?
Yesterday I remembered when our girl had her surgery… and now I see this… Hope that Penny is doing well!

  4. OH, YES, P! You look strong and well. You’ll be up and about in no time. Flat out driving everybody crazy, which is how things are supposed to play out over there. I like your non-cone. However I hope you don’t miss any important transmissions from outer space.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  5. Victoria says:

wow – new age cone/flotation device -sure looks more comfy than the cone – so glad you got your girl back and can spoil her silly!

  6. Kismet says:

There are some humans in need of that surgery. Michael Vick comes to mind.

  7. So glad she’s home safe and sound and her surgery is over. I do believe it’s more traumatic on us than our dogs…but that’s what comes with the territory I guess.

  8. Emmadog says:

Glad she is home and doing well. My sisters and I didn’t have cones or anything and never bothered our stitches. You have one day down…what, 13 to go???

  9. dashlilly says:

I love the groggy face! It will wear off though!! Don’t get caught unawares!!!

  10. Eko is a Gentle-dog that’s for sure. many thanks to your vet and his team, that was pawsome.
I’m glad your energizer bunny is back with you and I’m sure after some days, she is back to be your Whirlwind-Penny :o)

  11. raisingdaisy says:

Such a sleepy little face! I’m so glad Penny is safely back at home. As I suspected, recovery for a large dog is MUCH easier than for a small dog – Penny looks so much better than Daisy did (for two weeks!) and it’s great that she’s taking treats. Eko is being such a gentleman! Glad the whole family is back together again. Speedy recovery to the little cutie! 🙂

  12. KDKH says:

She my still have to use the cone…if she can’t leave it alone. I’m sure she will be quite fashionable!

  13. That was so cute that you were ready to bound out the door at NOON! Love it! Waiting til 5pm would seem like an eternity to me too! Ohh I laughed at those photos of sweet Penny!!!! I have never seen those before!! I am certain in the next day or so she will be good as new!!!! You are just the best (Emily too and oh of course Eko!!!!!)

  14. coastingnz says:

Yey welcome home Penny and that’s a huge whew from us all. Love the pillow – so much better than the cone and very dignified for the lady.

  15. No more cone of shame?? I would have loved the pictures and a video for that one.

Glad to see everything went well.

  16. Connie Taylor says:

I think you should tell the vet to get a pink pillow for the girls and of course blue for the boys, or other colors that could be chosen. That grey-ish color doesn’t do much to show off how pretty Penny is while she’s recovering (She could get more treats with a nicer color!). So glad she’s home now. 🙂 🙂

  17. So happy she’s fine and dandy and I know you were mighty happy to bring her home. No doubt even Eko missed her! The collar is way cool and I think miles better than that plastic cone thing – they just HAD to be uncomfortable. At least this new type has no irritating edges and she can SLEEP with it on if she needs to. Soon she’ll be hopping around like a wild woman again………..and I know you’ll be happy to see that!

  18. scarlybobs says:

YAY! I am so glad you have her home and she is coping well 🙂

  19. Eve says:

Be glad Penny isn’t like a dog I had that I was also told to keep quiet and still; but since she was an outside dog and I had to work the next day came home and she was running like crazy around the yard. I just laughed and shook my head. But luckily the stitches didn’t come undone and she was fine. Good luck with the patient. I’m sure she’ll be ready to go tomorrow! lol

  20. DZ Dogs says:

    Hooray Penny!

  21. Abbie says:

Lol, I was laughing so hard when I read your description of your phone conversation with your vet! I could so see myself doing that! Good to hear that Penny made it home safe and sound… Give her some extra loving from her fan-club here on the blog <- just an excuse for you to spoil her! ;P (And Eko too, for letting Penny share his bed; he is too sweet! Hopefully she will be all healed up and back to making trouble soon! 😛

  22. So glad Penny is safe and sound at home! Love the new answer to the cone!

  23. So glad she’s home and recuperating well. We always worry over our babies when they’re having a procedure, no matter how common. What an exciting time you’ve had over the last few weeks! Wedding, new bed, surgery, funny flotation collar. Don’t you think it’s time to slow down a bit?

  24. I’m so glad she’s home safe and now her humans can relax.
