What’s the strangest thing your pet’s asked for?

Anyone with a pet knows you don’t need words to get your point across. With an arsenal of whines/barks/grumbles/purrs and a limitless number of body wiggles, our pets can tell us just about everything. Our pets often ask us questions. “Can you feed me?” “Can you take me outside?” “Can
Anyone with a pet knows you don’t need words to get your point across. With an arsenal of whines/barks/grumbles/purrs and a limitless number of body wiggles, our pets can tell us just about everything. Our pets often ask us questions. “Can you feed me?” “Can you take me outside?” “Can you move your butt over so I can hop on the couch?” I’m fairly adept at speaking “Eko and Penny,” but it did take me a while to understand one of Eko’s more unique requests. It seemed to happen randomly. Eko would be well exercised and well fed, but he’d still mope about and whine. I’d find him standing or sitting in random places. Is Eko whining because he didn’t get enough wedding gifts?

Eventually I figured out Eko wasn’t sitting in random places. He was sitting in sunny places. He was whining at me for more sun. Unfortunately, I’m still working on becoming master of the cosmos (give it time) so I can’t quite tell the sun what to do. In the meantime, I let Eko out back to find a sunny spot.

Rhodesian RIdgeback, sun, chicago, puppy,

Sweet bliss

Eko loves the sun, but he also loves spending time with us. So to solve that problem, when I let him out to sunbathe he stands by the door and whines. Not to come in, but to ask us to come out with him.

And sometimes, his plan works!

“Yeah, I know it’s ridiculous, but Eko’s finally quiet and it’s actually really nice out” – Emily

Rhodesian RIdgeback, sun, chicago, puppy,

I think we’re going to have to invest in some porch furniture

Lounge chairs, definitely lounge chairs

The squeaky wheel gets the oil and the whiny dog gets the sun!

So, my dog asks me to sunbathe with him. I have a feeling Eko isn’t the only pet with unique requests. What strange or unique things has your pet asked for?

Comments for What’s the strangest thing your pet’s asked for?

  1. Chicago pizza. Can’t tell you how many times Cody had attempted to get it or was successful at getting a slice. He also (during the time we were at church) was able to open a present and ate some chocolate.

  2. we have an ugly wire now, straight through our house, that I can blog while sitting on Easy’s bed…we have a happy Easy now and the ugly wire… fortunately Mark marked the wire with yellow tape now it looks like blogging at a crime scene :o)

  3. PigLove says:

I have to admit that I ask for things every once in a while. Most times though, I just get dad’s credit card, shop on line and order it myself. What can I say – this piggy has skills. But the ONE thing I always ask more of – Cheerios. I can’t get enough of those delectable little circles of joy. Any flavor is my favorite flavor. XOXO – Bacon

  4. Thomas Walker says:

Hey guys. Hope penny is feeling better! My ridgy does a 2 scratch on the blanket when she wants to come under and cuddle! Then I have a solution for your Eko and sun problem. Get an electric blanket, sandwich it between 2 blankets and put that in a dovet cover. Put it in the usual sunny spot and turn it on and get back to using inside furniture!

  5. Victoria says:

Rigby likes steak – he will whine and whine and if you turn your back he will steal if off of the stove…..muffin just lays down and does a low whine when she wants belly rubs….and don’t do it and then walk off too quick because she needs it rubbed for a long time!

  6. Cupcake says:

You’ve got a good eye there, W. Chairs. Definitely chairs. Brilliant idea. Not a moment too soon. I rarely communicate like Mom’s old dog did. I stay chill and let things happen. That’s how I roll….

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  7. Kismet says:

Kali wants out to chase lizards but they’re quick and she has a one-track mind when she sees one.

  8. So nice of Emily to sit out there in the sun with him. Yes you do need some patio furniture.

  9. Ellen Quilty says:

Yes Nikki like all dogs has learned to communicate to get what she wants.Since she is a Ridgeback she almost never barks but whining is another story. She makes all the usual requests but the funniest one is her behaviors when she wants to be brushed.A few years ago I started brushing her in the shower when it was too cold to do it outside. Now when she wants a brushing she gets in the shower stall and stands there waiting for me to notice. If I take too long I can hear loud whining coming from upstairs and of course I must rush up there to do her bidding.

  10. Neeka loves sleeping under her blanket on our bed and Khoi. During the night, if she moves around, she’ll whine softly or push on my legs to tell me to throw it back over her.
Khoi is an avid gopher hunter. He’ll bark at you to go outside and hunt. Yes, he barks. A lot. Loudly. (He didn’t read the ridgeback handbook) He’ll also stare you down if you even think about going back inside.

  11. dashlilly says:

Dash is much like Eko about the sunshine. He actually has a whine that is accompanied by a wiggle so that I know this is a different request than just outside. The funniest request, and I really do recognize it, is when he is ready to go get a bone he buried earlier in the day. It is a sing song whine, a bark and a wiggle butt. It is usually after a long evening walk. I let him out, he heads into the back yard, digs up the bone, comes back to the back door, yelps, I let him in and he finds himself a good spot under the dining room table. Yep, I guess I speak Dash. Lilly is pretty straight forward in her requests. Snuggle, snack, and walk are about it. Great post!

  12. harrispen says:

One of our first dogs, a German Shepherd dog, loved to lick my feet. If she was in the mood she would poke at my feet and stare at me until I took off my shoes and socks and obliged her. I usually happily complied because she gave a very good and thorough foot massage. Now Millie likes to give me these same foot massages but so far hasn’t been as demanding.

  13. Joan says:

My two dogs, Sadie & Buddy double team us every night to sit outside. They lay their heads in my lap at the same time and stare up at me with big brown pouty eyes. Works every time.

  14. Emmadog says:

We mostly ask for hugs, and when Mom has had enough and says down, we hug tighter because we want more hugs.

  15. houndstooth4 says:

Ah, this takes me back to our Lilac days! Lilac was a senior Greyhound we adopted who became rather known for her bossy, demanding ways. One of her greatest joys was to lay on her perfectly fluffed bed in front of the big box fan, aimed just so to keep her comfortable. Lilac would bark and whine at me if a) one of the other dogs dared to lay on her bed in front of the fan so that I would make the interloper move, b) if her bed had become lumpy and needed fluffing, c) if the fan wasn’t angled just right and needed to be moved for optimum old lady dog comfort, or d) if she just wanted to make me crazy. And darn it, it worked! She had us so well-trained that it wasn’t even funny. There’s something about those senior dogs that you just can’t say no to!

  16. Dottie and Tuffy-Cat says:

I love all the ways your pups talk to all of you. My cat, Tuffy, really is a dog reincarnated. He tells me he wants to be brushed by getting up on my vanity chair, so he will easily be noticed when I get out of the shower. Yep, that’s a real good time to brush a 20 lb. black cat, resulting in my needing a good rinsing off when we’re through. At least he doesn’t request it every day. But, he does have other things he knows how to get with just a meow or “flip”, his favorite trick. He bends his head down on the floor, curls his neck and pulls all 20 lbs. over, for a magnificent acrobatic flip. Gotta love our animals. I really loved the way Emily gave into Eko and took him out to the porch with her. A very loving way to bond.

  17. I’m exactly the same. I whine and cry for my humans to bring out the sun or let me out in it and stay with me. I do this almost every day of the summer.
    ~Lowryder~

  18. Lovely pigtures. Our oddest request was when whee squeaked and kept running around early in the mornings. Mummy thought we wanted food or cuddles, eventually she worked out whee would calm down if she opened the window because whee love the smell of fresh air and all the outdoor scents!

  19. fredrieka says:

I look intently for anything in momwithoutpaws hands, you never know what is there she can share

  20. That’s pretty sweet…next he’s going to be asking you to move to California.

  21. With his communication skills, maybe Eko has a future in politics?! 😉

  22. Stef says:

    Love this entry!

  23. Nutmeg3 says:

Kaiya wanted me to stop going down into the yard to throw the ball but to stay on the deck and throw it from there, so she could add running up and down the stairs to the fun of fetch. I was slow, it took ,e ’til the 3rd day to figure it out.
