She was just a cute little stinker

But she was completely fearless

Penny had her annual check-up last week but this time the visit was a bit different.

Yes, Penny cuts a much different figure, but that’s not what I mean

Penny’s last visit to our vet was for her spay surgery so she unfortunately has some less than positive associations with the office. Accordingly, this is how I had to sit in the waiting room with my tough pup.

“Will, don’t leave me with them!”

Luckily, this time I got to stay by Penny’s side. She gave me plenty of sad looks, but I gave her plenty of treats to make up for it

The exam was easy, Penny took her vaccination shots like a champ and we were finished in no time. Nevertheless, Penny still wasn’t thrilled about the visit.

“You guys are all jerks!”

Contrary to Penny’s puppy-attitude, the staff at our vet are all great. Even better is that my little battering ram has a clean bill of health and won’t need a scheduled vet visit for another year. (Keyword: “scheduled.” Hopefully there are no surprises!)

No more visits for the year? Penny can certainly smile about that

As we walked out of the office, Penny shook herself off and looked back at me like, “Hey, I have a reputation to uphold at the dog beach so don’t tell anyone I jumped into your lap in there.”

Your secret is safe with me, Penny. Well, me, and the internet.

Comments for Penny’s Annual Vet Visit

  1. Penny is one of that patients who have an eye on that dogtors… well done! It’s great that you got good news… and I hope you will keep that secret… I will keep it too, no worries Penny :o)

  2. Penny is very brave and thankfully got a clean bill of health. Despite his usual affability, Sam tends to react the same way but as soon as we’ve left, he’s completely over it. Love how dogs live in the moment! đŸ™‚

  3. OhMelvin says:

Awwwww, while we wish they were always confident, I love when they know they can jump into our laps for safety!

  4. Elyse says:

For some reason, all my dogs have been good patients. Duncan actually goes and hangs out at the vets on days when nobody can take care of him for long stretches. He gets to wander around, smell great smells, and say hello to everybody. They love him and he is perfectly happy to hang out there. We’re lucky because when he is uncooperative, well, that’s trouble!

  5. Haha…our Sally was like that after she was spayed too – although a bit more dramatic – she absolutely refused to go in the door, even to walk down the sidewalk. I had to change vets.

  6. Emmadog says:

Bailie still loves the vet despite getting spayed and getting shots, but Katie and I are scared to death!

  7. Ogee says:

The bigger they are…the harder they fall. Nice to know that Penny still needs your reassurance, isn’t it!?

  8. Kismet says:

“Unscheduled vet visits” means “expensive” in some weird Asian language.

  9. Cupcake says:

You were very brave, P. Lap-sitting is allowed at the vet. Also hiding under the waiting room chairs and staring at the door….. They have to keep it confidential. It’s a rule.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  10. Victoria says:

so cute – Muffin is 130lbs of beautiful, brave, sweet Newf …until we pull into the vet office parking lot then she tries to be the invisible Newf, the Newf statue (think immovable), the “I don’t need to get groomed or get my shots” Newf….yeah she is a baby in the vets office – sits on my lap and gives me all kinds of looks that would even make the Pope feel guilty bringing her in.

  11. We promise we won’t tell a soul!!!! Yay Penny for doing well (at least PRETTY WELL! BOL!) at the vet! Most importantly, YAY for a clean bill of health!

  12. coastingnz says:

Don’t blame you Penny – our big fella Nico is not a vet fan but Ziggy takes it all in his stride – sees the needle and looks as if say “is that all you’ve got – bring it on” lol

  13. Ellen Quilty says:

My friend had a large male Ridgeback who was so terrified of the vet that she couldn’t get him out of the car.The vet used to have to bring his syringes outside and give him his shots in the backseat .Fortunately he was a very healthy dog and never needed to make use of the indoor facilities.

  14. fredrieka says:

I always wrinkle my brow with disapproval I have till September

  15. C Taylor says:

Our Bentley had an unexpected trip to the vet last week. She found a live bat in our backyard (during daylight hours), we carefully bagged it and took it to the Health Dept., and it tested positive for rabies! So off to the vet with Ms “B” for a booster rabies shot, to be on the safe side. She didn’t mind visiting the vet, he gave her some nice treats after her shot, so that helped!

  16. Marcela says:

Aww! Poor baby. Penny’s face is so full of expressions.

  17. Congrats on a great checkup, I hope too that she doesn’t have to go back for a year.

  18. raisingdaisy says:

Glad the checkup went well. Yeah, spay surgeries change everything – Daisy loved the vet until after her spay; since then, she trembles as soon as we walk in the door.

  19. T&S says:

Both our dogs hate the vet untill its all over and they get treats and cuddling… he calls them beauty (our male) and character (our female), when they come in she obeys everything, he always tries to run.

  20. Silly, Penny! Hey is that “Homeward Bound” on the TV in the waiting room?!?!

  21. Hi Will I met Lottie the new baby on our street and she is so like Penny in the beginning :-). I have video of her and will add to my blog tomorrow đŸ™‚

  22. Boomdeeadda says:

awww, love that ‘little stinker’ photo. What a diff one year makes in a puppy!
