When you have a pet, you’re in charge. Well, in theory, at least. When things are going well, being in charge is easy. 24.1

After a romp at the beach the pups quietly lay in the sun. All is well

But running the show gets tough when there’s a problem. No matter the cause of the issue, the pups look to me for the solution. Mostly the situations are all manageable.

Hungry? I feed them. Need to go out? I take them out. Restless? We head for a run. But there are some problems which are above my paygrade. A recent string of partly-cloudy days meant the sunny spots the pups love so much would frequently get cut off.

24.2

“Hey Penny, where’d the sun go?”

24.3

The two look around in bewilderment at first, but they always reach the same conclusion

24.4

“This is Will’s fault. Let’s stare at him until he fixes it.”

Despite my ardent protests that I have no dominion over the sun and the weather, both pups seem certain that if I’m not responsible for clouds, at the very least I can make them go away.

These past few days have done little to dispel the notion. The pups stare at me, I say I can’t do anything, but then a few minutes later the sun comes back out. In their minds all they have to do to get the sun back is stare at me!

24.5

“Much better, Will. Now keep the sun here.”

In the end, no amount of pleading stares can stop the sun.

24.6

“I swear I left the sun in the middle of the deck just a minute ago…”

But Eko and Penny still seem convinced I’m behind it all. And I’m not quite sure if it would be better or worse if they knew the truth. So for now I’ll let sleeping dogs lie. In the sun, of course.

Anyone else have a pet who is convinced you control the weather or some other phenomenon?

Comments for Who’s In Charge Here?

  1. of course, Easy checks all doors if it rains actually everywhere… the he barks at Mark… because that MUST be his fault… he also blames it on us when he has a crashlanding or if a rabbit/pigeon/leave/wrapping paper/whatnot disappears before he can get it… we are evil…

  2. I haven’t been able to convince Sam either that I’m only a semi-decent wizard at certain times. It’s a terrible cross to bear. 😉

Storms. Le Moo is afraid of storms and I’m convinced she thinks we can turn it on or off…and then she seems distressed when we don’t do it after she stares at us and cries about it.
The look of disappointment we get when we don’t turn the storm off is really heart-breaking!

Oh yes. We took Duncan to Maine in early June where it was cool and pleasant. We returned to the hot, humid DC area and Duncan is baffled. Why is it so nasty out?

Oh well. Back to Maine in August!

  5. Hahaha too cute! Ziva wants me to stop the rain, she hates peeing in the wet grass. 🙂

  6. you mean you DON’T control the weather? (wink)

When I read the title of this post, my immediate answer was, “Well, Penny’s in charge, of course!” But then I read the rest and I understand your dilemma. 😉 Daisy doesn’t think we control the weather, but she does think she calls the shots as to whether she’ll allow us to take her out in said weather. Cold? Yes. Heat? NO. A few inches of snow? Fun, yes! Heavy snow? Surely you jest. 🙂

  8. Kismet says:

You’re not fooling anyone who reads your blog. Penny is in charge.

  9. Emmadog says:

The heck with the weather! Didn’t you notice Penny was nude sunbathing? Her collar was in plain sight in front of her. Oh my! That girl is really something!

  10. I just love how they are best buds and are always laying next to each other.

  11. Cupcake says:

I stare at Mom constantly. She can’t figure out what I want. Neither can I, but I’m sure she can make it happen.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake
