Water: A Fickle Love Affair

Eko and Penny love water.

Nothing makes them happier than crashing through the water at the beach

But here’s the thing. Eko and Penny also hate water.

When they discover it’s raining outside, all of a sudden they both decide they no longer want to go for a walk

These wicked witches act like if their heads get wet they are going to melt

But then they go do stuff like this:

Clearly there’s no fear of getting their heads wet

I mean, Penny is practically part dolphin

Yet back at home, as soon as they realize it’s time for a shower the pups once again yowl and pout.

I like to call them the “Actors Guild” when they’re this dramatic about bath time

For my pups, lakes and pools and beaches are fine but, rain and showers are mortal enemies. So as near as I can figure, it’s not water that Penny and Eko hate, it’s gravity!

Any other theories? Anyone else have a pup who only selectively enjoys water?

Comments for Water: A Fickle Love Affair

  1. Nicole says:

That’s so funny. Mine do the same thing… They love romping in shallow water, even laying in the water troughs at dog parks. But if it’s raining they don’t even want to go potty. Mine also are horrified of actually swimming. They’ll go as far as their feet touch but they won’t swim. Do penny and eko actually swim?

  2. it’s probably because the rain water AND the water in the shower have something in common… look in the puddles and on the water what goes down the drain when we take a shower… it’s dirty… and therefore we need an umbrella and no bath or shower :o) pawsome canine wisdom, huh?

  3. It seems to us that Sammie doesn’t like water that is sprayed – from a hose, spray bottle, shower head, or the sky. She does love bodies of water, though, that aren’t deeper than her chest!

  4. Richard Nichols says:

I really enjoy your emails each day.To the issue of pups who only selectively enjoys water, maybe it’s learned behavior from people, who for the most part, jump in the ocean or pool, but stay out of the rain.

  5. KarenS says:

The adversion to water seems to be common among RR’s! My old guy will weigh his options when it’s raining & he needs to take care of his business. The younger one just makes a mad dash out. He will also tolerate a walk in the rain better. Old Bruno won’t. Neither care to get wet.

I’m still amazed at Penny’s water adventures. Then again, it’s the chase. The digging for a treasure. My first RR was like that. These 2 will wade to get a drink. Maybe try to get an easy catch. Not much more.

Each dog is different. That’s what makes them unique. And fun.

Happy treasure hunting Eko. And enjoy the chase Penny.

  6. When we got Neeka, our breeder told us Ridgebacks are allergic to water. She lived up to that. Khoi, on the other hand, is like Penny; he will run through water and not hesitate to swim after ducks and geese. However, a swimming pool (built in or kids’ pool) is the scariest thing on earth. Rain, like flies landing on their thin hide, will drive them inside. We’ve determined they only like to get wet if it’s on their terms. Or there’s peanut butter on the side of the bath tub.

Mayhem loves lakes and pools and jumps in with reckless abandon. She goes so far as to swim laps and never wants to get out. Rain is hit or miss, I’ve found her outside dancing in it and other times she doesn’t want to risk it. Baths however, you’d think I was torturing her.

  8. Me says:

Zoey used to hate water, any water…ponds, rivers, rain, puddles and even mud. I kind of assumed it was because she lived outside with no shelter between the ages of 8-10 weeks, but who knows?

As she got older she got used to mud and puddles. She will even wade chest deep into ponds, and viciously attacks the water in the paddling pool…but take her out in rain (and, more recently, snow) and she tucks her tail, hangs her head and refuses to move.

We have to be careful not to walk her near bushes in the rain; she slinks underneath them because she’s so small and it’s near impossible to get her out!!

  9. Joanne says:

We had a Chessie (Chesapeake Bay Retriever), known to be water lovers, and she wanted no part of water. She was thought to be a little odd. RIP sweet Riley

  10. raisingdaisy says:

Yep, that sounds just like Daisy. She hates baths, hates walking in the rain, hates sprinklers and hoses…oh wait, she won’t wade in the ocean either. Darn, blew that theory! 😉 I guess Daisy is just a plain ol’ water-hater.

  11. Emmadog says:

Bailie and I love to swim, we don’t mind a rain storm in the least, but bath…four letter word, no thank you.

  12. Joan grubet says:

Buddy & Sadie love to splash and swim in the pool all day. But the moment it rains or the sprinklers run they run for cover!

  13. Same at our house! They love the river, and lakes, but they hate bath time, rain, and sprinklers. 🙂

  14. Kismet says:

Water is OK. It’s the acid rain that’s the problem.

  15. Cupcake says:

I do not have a love/hate relationship with water. I only have a HATE relationship with it. I don’t even like to drink very much….

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  16. isn’t that the truth, gambler loves to retrieve in the water but the other night when he had to train and it was raining he didn’t want to come out of his box.

  17. Hmm….apparently water on THEIR terms is dandy and fun, water on YOUR terms (aka bath) is definitely on the AVOID list! HAHA

  18. gsimburger says:

I think for Echo and Penny the sunshine probably makes water okay and I’m sure a little heat helps too. The only time Leo tolerates water is in the bath – operative word here being TOLERATES. I am certain this is because of the treat reward he knows he will be getting!

  19. Marcela says:

Lol. You truly have a vivid imagination. I thoroughly enjoy your posts and pics:-)

  20. The only water Sam likes is the stuff in his water bowl, otherwise he’s not a fan of water at all. Maybe because it makes his hair even curlier but Standard Poodles were bred to be water fowl retrievers! Someone forgot to give him that memo I guess.
