Last week we had our first four-legged visitor to the new apartment and he could not have been any stinking-cuter. Meet our new pal, Leo!

“Hi, I’m cute. Give me treats.”

This pup, like the famous renaissance artist, was named after the even more famous Ninja Turtle, Leonardo. He’s my friends’ 10-week-old Bernese Mountain Dog. Did I mention he’s too stinking cute?

Paws the size of his head? Check

Leo’s still too young for the dog park, but since Eko and Penny are healthy and up to date on all vaccinations we invited Leo over for some puppy-socialization.

Leo was initially wary of Eko, but Eko was actually the more nervous one. He was terrified we’d saddled him with another puppy!

Not surprisingly, Penny was eager to test Leo’s mettle

“Ok kid, you take this ball and then I fight you for it. Got it?”

Leo quickly came out of his shell and gamely battled with Penny

Leo also found time to taste test my camera strap

Penny may be the big pup now, but she should enjoy it while she can. Leo is likely to be three times her size when full grown

Emily always swears we’ll never get another puppy, but…

That’s what they all say! She was as hopeless as I was to resist Leo’s charm

Eko and Penny got a new friend, Leo got some great socialization time and we got plenty of puppy-cuddles. A winning afternoon for all!

Comments for Meet Leo!

  1. Marcela says:

Wow! So, the brave and more daring of your furry kids is actually Penny, while Eko is more laid back. Will, is Leo an Australian Shepherd? He is adorable:-)

  2. Oh this cute pup is a guarantor for puppy fever :o) My cousin bought a Bernese Mountain Dog, it’s a cute 8 month little girl now, like a teddy bear :o)

  3. Oh God I LOVE LOVE LOVE Bernese Mountain Dogs and Leo is BEYOND ADORABLE!! I was thinking about the fact that he will be HUGE while I was reading this. Wouldn’t it be great if they had smaller pups just like Leo that STAYED that size? I would DIE!! He is precious!

  4. meANXIETYme says:

OH MY GOODNESS we love Bernese Mountain Dogs. We tried to adopt one several times but it never worked out. We had a mixed BMD that we adored. If we were to ever get a puppy (not going to happen) it would be a Berner. They are adorable pups and amazing dogs! Those pictures are killer cute! Enjoy the puppiness in Leo while still being able to send him home! Best of both worlds! 🙂

  5. Leo looks TERRIFIED in the first few pics. BOL! If I were Eko, I, too, would have been freaking out. I can’t do the puppy thing again. I flat out refuse. *ear licks* Noodle

  6. Emmadog says:

We love this breed. It is huge in Europe and they are so very cute! Emily will be ready for another puppy down the road, but right now no need with Penny around!

  7. Kismet says:

That’s as close to motherhood as Penny will get.

  8. Gah! Look at that face! Oh Penny, I see you’ve got some competition. Too cute for words.

  9. Wait until Penny tries to play bitey-face with Leo when he’s older. She’ll get nothing but a mouthful of hair! BMDs are great for your climate zone. Out here in the west, I feel sorry for them when we have multiple days of 100 degrees plus. You see a lot of them in Tahoe though. Beautiful dogs. My aunt’s dogs were insanely loyal to her.

  10. O.M.G. beyond cute …. almost makes a person say they could raise another puppy …. but then I remember why we’ve done that only once every 20 years and adopted deserving adult or seniors along the way in between 🙂

  11. lori gallo says:

In addition to his good looks, Leo is quite a character! He is smart and very observant! He gave our chocolate lab a run for her money on a recent visit. Can’t wait to see this personality develop! (Proud dog grandma here)

  12. KarenS says:

Too stinking cute, so very true!! Love Bernies, almost as much as I love Ridgies!!

Glad you all enjoyed your time with Leo, he’ll be growing bigger every day. And will still be stinking cute 🙂

  13. coastingnz says:

Oh my gosh – that is one puppy that is going to break many many many a heart – adorable. Love all the expressions – beautifully captured and something special for his “Mum and Dad” to have too for the memory bank.

  14. C Taylor says:

Aren’t BMD suppose to come with a keg of rum when you adopt them ? Where’s Leo’s keg ? Adorable pup, almost makes one forget about teething, up every couple of hours, etc . Glad your pups were such good hosts!

  15. Leo is absolutely ADORABLE and yes – stinking cute too!!!!!! Looks to me like he handled himself pretty darn well around the “big dogs”……..I love the look in his eyes in these photos. What a babe! Can’t wait to watch him grow up – hope you have him over for “dog meet-ups” so we can see him as he begins to catch up to Eko and Penny!

  16. Elyse says:

Oh, Leo is adorable. We used to have a Bernese Mtn dog, Charlie. Charlie was born in NY State and we moved with him to Switzerland, where he was STILL confused for a St. Bernard … The neighbors were very amused by his birth!

Good luck to your friends with Leo — he was truly the best dog around kids you can imagine — my son Jacob (1 year old when we got Charlie) and his friends were well, and passively, protected from harm when Charlie was around. Charlie not so much, but he was incredibly sweet at all times — even with Jacob’s arm crammed down his throat!

  17. Fozziemum says:

Leo is adorable! There is a beautiful Bernese Mountain Dog in town…he is massive and a real leaner…which is a worry hahaha..glad the pups were kind with this little big guy 🙂

  18. Genevieve says:

Leo is ridiculous. I cannot wait to see him in a few months. Enjoy bossing him around while you can, Penny.

  19. Abbie says:

Oh my gosh Leo IS SO ADORABLE! So weird, too, because my sister wants to get a Berner puppy, but is having a hard time finding a good breeder that is (relatively) close to us. Made me get puppy fever so bad! I need to foster something soft and cuddly soon! I loved Penny’s face…priceless. And you caption your dogs perfectly. 🙂

  20. Andrew (Leo's owner) says:

    Love the post Will!
Thanks everybody for the comments, yes he’s adorable, it’s hard to stay mad at that face for more than a second. He’s been a great puppy, and yes we’ve been the most popular people on the block, can barely make a few houses without stopping.
Most importantly, he was really tired after “playing” with Penny. Can’t wait for round two….

  21. You are right, he is too stinking cute. Don’t tell Jack, but I love these dogs, they are my favorites.

  22. raisingdaisy says:

OMG Leo is painfully cute!!!! He did look awestruck by Eko’s size – that first photo of them meeting is priceless! I’m looking forward to seeing if the balance of power shifts between Leo and Penny once Leo is towering over her LOL!! Although something tells me that Penny’s indomitable spirit will win out over size every time. 😉

  23. Karen says:

What a cutie patootie, always love your photos and comments. You are wonderful “parents.”
