My Private Dog Beach

Chicago is the third largest city in the country. The soundtrack to my day includes rumbling trains, screeching buses and roaring planes. My open window fills with conversations of passing pedestrians and wordless hoots of children on the playground. Chicago is the third largest city in the country. The soundtrack to my day includes rumbling trains, screeching buses and roaring planes. My open window fills with conversations of passing pedestrians and wordless hoots of children on the playground. I love city life. It’s vibrant, exciting and bursting with opportunity. Of course, I also appreciate the benefits of quiet serenity. Which is why I love visiting the dog beach on cooler fall days. The shore is clear. With the dunes behind me and the lake in front of me, it feels like I have my own private retreat. Rhodesian Ridgeback, blog, chicago, montrose dog beach, adventure

And my own entertainment! Some of Eko and Penny’s best runs happen when we’re alone

With no distractions and no obstacles, the pups have free rein to fly

The only sounds are the alternating rhythms of lapping waves and pounding paws

The pups pause for deep breaths of the cool air

Then take off for another romp

I know a city of nearly three million people lies just beyond eyesight

But for a few moments it’s only me, Eko, Penny,

A fall breeze,

And our own private beach

Once we walk over the dune we re-enter the city and all it’s wonderful cacophony. I always do so more relaxed and more energized. That may sound like a contradiction, but if you have ever been out in the world, alone with just you and your dog you’ll know exactly what I mean.

If you haven’t, I highly recommend finding a beach, trail or quiet place near you!

Comments for My Private Dog Beach

  1. If Michigan were more “dog-friendly” (at least in our area), I would! Love the photo with the pups “flying!!!” I LOVE CHICAGO!

  2. it’s great that your city has so much different faces… and that there are still places of peace and freedom between all the busy city life :o) We will visit our beach next weekend, although Easy isn’t a beach boy, it has to be ebb tide and we have to watch that he gets no wet paws…The laugh is always ours when Mark has to carry him along the beach :o)

  3. You nailed this one Will. There really is nothing like a quiet beach or trail and your two dogs ripping it up. Neeka and Khoi immediately go into mad minute as soon as they hit the sand. I go into relax mode when I see we have the entire beach to ourselves. No people to worry about interrupting or other dogs to intrude on their craziness. Trails are even better. When I pull into the lot and there are no cars or horse trailers, I know it’s going to be a great one!

What a peaceful and fun way to spend a fall day.

  5. Emmadog says:

One of the best parts of fall is everything is deserted, so we always feel like the world is our own too!

  6. Kismet says:

We have all that at home, except for the city and the water.

  7. We’re lucky enough to live far enough away from the city to have that serenity almost everyday on our walks. You’re right, there is nothing like it.

  8. Nothing quite like the sound of a pounding surf to bring peace and calm into your soul. That and two adorable pooches running like 60 on a deserted beach! City life is pawsome, but so are those quiet moments on the beach 😉

  9. Beach waves are very soothing. I love that they’re so close to the city sounds. Mom and I get some quiet time when we’re hiking. Also early in the morning in our neighborhood, it’s pretty quiet while we walk around.

    Love and licks,

  10. Ahhh yes! So lovely to find a quiet place within the city 🙂

We are very very fortunate to live right on the beach – and a reasonably remote beach at that so for us if we even see anyone else on it we think “what, who’s that on our beach” lol.

  12. Jesse says:

Great photos. They do an awesome job portraying how fast Eko and Penny are.

It’s great that you have the quiet, serene beach as a contrast to the noisy city. I always think that a little bit of everything is better than a whole lot of one thing – it makes each difference more interesting and makes life so much richer.

    wooo hooooo fun stuff

  15. Lovely post. I went to Chicago many years ago, and wished I could have stayed there longer. Beautiful city, friendly people, and now I know it’s got a beach that’s dog-friendly too it’s gone to the very top of my favourite American cities list 🙂

  16. Wonderful action shots, looks like a great day
