The Wandering Worries of Dog People

There’s a shorthand amongst people with dogs. The oft-said sentence starts, “I’ve got to get going, my dog…” We could be on the phone, we could be out to dinner, we could be doing just about anything. But universally we get a sixth-sense feeling that we need to check in
There’s a shorthand amongst people with dogs. The oft-said sentence starts, “I’ve got to get going, my dog…” We could be on the phone, we could be out to dinner, we could be doing just about anything. But universally we get a sixth-sense feeling that we need to check in with our pups. Often, if you’re like me, your imagination gets ahead of you and you start imagining doomsday scenarios. You wonder if you left the oven on, then you wonder if Penny is opening the oven and burning the house down. You sprint home and…

Penny is poised like a perfect little lady

But you can’t find Eko! You’re certain a criminal mastermind has kidnapped him! You dial 9-1-…. then hear a snoring sound from underneath the table.

Oh. right.

This week I’ve had a bit of a pre-doomsday feeling. Emily and I have a friend’s wedding so we’ll be leaving the pups for the weekend. It will be the first time leaving them in our new place so of course I have a whole cascade of worries.

The pups are clearly broken up about our impending departure as well.

“Will, however will I nap in this comfy new chair without you?”

“Keep the noise down on your way out, I need my beauty sleep”

Sure, the pups may momentarily fret when we walk out with our bags. But they won’t have long to worry because they’ll be distracted by our favorite maniac.

“Did somebody say slumber party!?!?”

Eko and Penny will be spending the weekend with my brother and his pup, Doc.

These troublemakers always have plenty of fun together

So while I may fret a time or two (or ten) over the weekend, I know the pups will happily spend most of their time like this:

Still waiting on the Olympics to recognize “synchronized sleeping”

My bag is packed and it’s time to pack away my worries too. “I’ve got to get going, my dogs… are in great hands!”

  1. Oh you will have a pj-pawty (or a no-pj pawty) at Doc’s? Pawsome! I always feel guilty when I leave the house without the pup and I’m probably a hopeless case at that front, I even interrupted a visit at my parents, because I felt bad without Easy. Fortunately my parents are as crazy as me and they had not really a problem to drive 12 hours to bring me back… just for a smile on Easy’s face :o)

Dog owners seem to have that sixth sense when it comes to our pups – similar to mums and their kids I’d imagine. The first time Nala had a run to the emergency department – I’d left her with my neighbour for the afternoon – it had been a busy day out with the family but at around five oclock in the afternoon I started to feel quite nervous and anxious, as though something was wrong with Nala – I put it down to me being paranoid because being a vet just kinda makes you that way I think. When I got home 45 mins later I found poor Nala in a terrible state with leg and chest wounds and we had to rush her off to the university’s emergency department. Turns out, around 5pm my neighbour had decided to pop off to the shops – so the same time I had that horrible feeling about Nala – something bad actually happened to her.

Maybe its a sixth sense – or maybe we’ve just come to expect these things from our pups or they happen often enough that we kind of just predict them, like Eko snoozing and Penny playing innocent.
With Nala its a case of: anything that can go wrong, will go wrong… from a cut foot to a torn ear – Nala has had and done it all. Think its time to invest in some bubble wrap around her noggin’. I definitely invested in insurance – even if you are a vet stuff still isn’t cheap!

Mom always worries when she leaves us too, but we are always fine. The only real danger are the suddenly exploding pillows around Bailie, but that seems to be on the decline at the moment.

We went through this just recently when we went off to a wedding. Left our pups with a really good friend (in our house). Came back to a quiet home and a note saying “all is well! partied like any normal kids would when the parents are away. at least we cleaned up afterward and no one got drunk.” 🙂
LOVED all the pictures, especially the synchronized sleeping!

  5. Victoria says:

love the synchronized swimming – so cute – muff and rigs do that to -although they are different breeds and different sizes they looks like mirror images. That feeling that something is wrong never quite goes away – but i am always relieved when i think something is up and i go looking for them and they are innocently sleeping instead of doing something crazy!

  6. We had to leave Neeka and Khoi for four days on the weekend of our daughter’s wedding. My son’s friend was house sitting for us for the first time. Now Neeka is your stereotypical Ridgeback; if she doesn’t know you well (as in, you live with her and feed her daily), then she doesn’t want to have anything to do with you. Khoi, on the other hand, is everyone’s friend. Needless to say, he was the easy one (for a change). Neeka was trouble, especially when poor Mason got home from work at 11:00 and let the dogs out. Neeka wouldn’t come back in until 1:30…. A.M. I was worrying about it all weekend. Kept getting those images of her huddled in the bushes by the neighbor’s pond. Not good since a skunk lives there. But that’s another story.

  7. Rachel Hopple says:

This was SUCH a worry when we had an epileptic dog, Willis. Even though he was safe in his cage, you NEVER knew what you would come home to. It was frightening, sad for him (and us), and something I hope others never have to experience.

  8. Marcela says:

Lol. I don’t be to be mean, but Will you suffer from separation anxiety. This is a symptom that most of us pet parents deny vehemently we don’t have, but you know what? We do:-)

  9. Jesse says:

This article is too true we do this all the time. BTW the synchronized sleeping photo is a riot. Cheers!

  10. Go and have yourselves a WONDERFUL time, they could NOT be in better “paws”, plus, as well-trained as your pups are, they would be a complete and total joy to take care of!

  11. Kismet says:

This weekend when you get those feelings that something is wrong, it will be about you brother. Don’t you like him? It’s cruel to stick him with Penny. 🙂

  12. coastingnz says:

oh my gosh that was like reading my mind lol. Knowing that your brother and Doc are with the pups though will certainly help ease your mind I’m sure – they’ll be having a great time so worry less and party more this weekend. All will be well – but totally understand!

  13. It is always hard for me to leave Rufus, but his dog sitter is one of my best friends from grade school and she just so happens to live on a farm and has a pup of her own. Needless to say, Rufus has way more fun than me during our trips away.

  14. raisingdaisy says:

Haha Welcome to parenthood! Whether it’s your own child or your pet baby, it’s the same worry. I LOVE that last photo – that’s amazing!! Glad they’ll be having a fun sleepover while you’re away. 🙂

  15. DZ Dogs says:

They are sooo cute!! And yes we go through this too, my biggest anxiety is leaving them outside unsupervised – I know weird right… But what if they jump the fence? Go under the weak section of the back gate, get stolen? Go through our house screen door and let the indoor kitties out?

Needless to say my pups have always been wonderful in the backyard, on a nice sunny day i’ll put them outside to play or lounge while I clean house or do some other silly adult task. But I find myself checking on them constantly.

  16. Good luck kids. Penny, do not open the oven. Just sayin’.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  17. fredrieka says:

I am a good pup more than likely if I am outside especially these days I am trying to find sun to lay in especially on the porch, if I am in my house I am laying in my cage with my favorite sleeping bag

  18. Eve says:

Go and have your fun! I’m sure the kids (uh, pups) will have lots of fun too with Doc and your brother! Can’t wait to read his version of what happens this weekend! Have a good time!

  19. I Know the feeling – we went away a few weekends ago and our dog walker stayed with them…I know all was fine, but I still worried and called about 10 times to check on them! I love that synchronized sleeping shot.

  20. Doesn’t look like the gang is bothered at all with you guys leaving.
