While Penny is off causing mayhem and distracting everyone, Eko likes to play the part of street hustler.

He always keeps his eyes open for targets

And casually strolls by…

“Nope, definitely not looking in your bag for treats. No need to be concerned.”

But it’s rare for people at the dog park to leave bags unattended, so Eko needs to deploy some David Blaine-like skills. Treats aren’t allowed in dog parks, but I’ll be the first to admit I’ve accidentally brought some in my pants/jacket pocket. Now that it’s fall, pants and jackets are coming back out. Which is good news for my resident magician.

First he spots his mark

Then he goes over for some love. At which point he’ll poke the target’s pockets

The guy laughingly told Eko he didn’t have any treats. But lo and behold, when he checked his pockets…

He laughed even harder. There were treats in his pocket. Eko did his happy-dance and was quite pleased with his performance

Eko has the best work-ethic in the biz. He canvasses the entire beach on our visits

Until he finds a target for his showmanship

I’m not the only one onto Eko’s tricks.

Penny’s caught on and will come over to help pry the mark from the magically appearing treats

I wonder if Hogwarts is accepting applications

Looking for some treats to appear? Eko’s your guy. As long as you’re okay watching them disappear too!

Comments for My Dog, The Street Magician

  1. Victoria says:

I have one a little funnier – Rigby is a pick pocket – if you wear a sweatshirt, jacket or coat and have a treat in the pocket he can get in and get it out without even touching you – he tries the same w/jean pockets and if your pants are really loose he is pretty good. Muffin just nudges all of your pockets to find the treat and then will step back and sit all pretty and wait for you to hand it over.

  2. HA! Eko and Penny……..or………..Mr. and Miss Minnie the Moocher (you may be too young to know about Minnie). Give them credit – they can spot a “mark” a mile away and the subtle approach gets rewards every time. Way better than knocking down someone and raiding their treat stash!

    Pam and Sam

  3. Naughty Eko. Is there any doggie version of Jailhouse Rock?

  4. Kismet says:

No treats allowed? I bet it wasn’t a dog who made up that rule. But, then again, it’s Chicago and nobody follows the rules especially those who made them.

  5. Great skill set to have Eko – it will always come in handy.

  6. Cupcake says:

Pocket treats are my favorite flavor! Good work, kids.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  7. Jo Rhodes says:

No treats at the dog park, seriously? That’s one of the dumbest things we’ve ever heard! Sam and Dean need to practice focusing on me, especially when there are other dogs around. Sometimes that doesn’t happen with out cheese.
(A message from S and D) The person who made up that rule needs a good training class. We have our mom trained. She says sit. We sit …. and we get a treat! It’s awesome! She’s really getting the hang of it.

  8. cafall says:

Can we hire him to check the laundry before it goes in the washer? Nothing worse than washing a dog biscuit or a piece of chicken.

  9. Emmadog says:

Maybe if you fed him at home he wouldn’t have to resort to this magic to get food? Katie used to do the same thing in her young and crazy days.

  10. Haha great. The patients at the clinic always tell the doctor when they leave treats in their dr coats

  11. raisingdaisy says:

He’s a clever one! If Penny learns his tricks and techniques, you’re going to have one indomitable girl on your hands!
