There were dog piles
And piles of blankets
One particularly dreary day left the pups wet and cold
It seemed like the perfect time to test out our favorite wintertime amenity – the fireplace.
We didn’t have a fireplace at our old apartment so all species are thrilled we have one here
Eko and Penny parked themselves in front of the fire from the first flame to the last ember
There is an ancient comfort in sitting with your dogs in front of a fire on a dark night. I have to imagine it was one of the first things our human and canine forerunners did together.
Like me, the pups enjoy staring raptly into the roaring flames
I also found it fascinating how both dogs knew from their very first fire to keep their distance from the hearth. Their normally nosy ways overridden by deep instinct. That said, the pups were desperate to get as warm as possible.
The both slid their toes forward. Inching closer…
Until they toasted those toes at the very edge of the floor, as close as physically possible
And so we quietly sat together in the darkness. The fire in front of us, the rain behind us and a stack of firewood as tall as I am. Winter, whenever you show up, we’re ready!
I think you are totally right, that must be one of the first things what humans and pups shared… or it was the reason that they found together… :o)
So cozy! I swear, my new RR looks JUST like penny, it is in her eyes and expressions. And my old boy looks a lot like Eko, if Eko were 12. How did you live through Penny’s puppyhood? Maggie is so sweet 90% of the time. But that other 10%, she is possessed!
Wow you guys begging for winter – i don’t hear that very often from anyone. We love it because our dogs love to play in the snow (much more than in the sun).

A warm fire is one of the things I like about winter! You guys look very snuggly indeed in front of yours! 🙂
Your dogs are much smarter than any I’ve ever encountered around campfires! We’re constantly shooing them away and grabbing at their tails as they wag precariously over the flames… silly dogs want to get as close as possible and end up singed all over. But I suppose an enclosed hearth is different than an open campfire.
The winter won’t seem so long with a fireplace-good move.

I’m pretty sure Duncan’s ancestors were toast. Literally. He is very curious about what all that flashing and crackling is.

Daisy keeps her distance from the fireplace. But then again, she’s a scaredy-cat (she’d nip me for calling her any kind of cat!).
We don’t have a fireplace but we have a pellet stove and believe me these past few days we’ve all been fighting to be as close to it as possible!
They loved it! Isn’t it so nice to have your own place?
Mom, Bailie, and Bert have had the fireplace on a time or two on a few chilly nights. They love lying in front of it. You all look nice and cozy.
