This past Saturday we hosted Emily’s co-residents for a potluck Thanksgiving. Anytime you have guests there’s a never ending list of chores and errands and tasks. There’s no hiding the commotion from the pups, who immediately know something is up.

While he escaped the reach of the vacuum, Eko kept a sharp eye out for any early guests

After a long day of following our frenetic cooking and cleaning, Eko and Penny were quite worked up. So right before showering I took them to the beach to burn off some steam.

The more tired the pups, the more polite they are as hosts

When I first got Eko, I was a total helicopter-parent whenever people were over. I’d hover over him in hopes of avoiding any trouble with guests. In my old age I’ve taken a more hands-off approach. I’ve found when I’m relaxed it’s a much more effective way of keeping them relaxed too.

We follow the simple rule of “look but don’t touch”

And there was oh so much delicious food to look at

“Don’t mind us, we’re definitely not giving guests puppy-dog eyes in hopes of getting scraps…”

At one point Eko attempted to use mind control to get some turkey

And was completely incensed it didn’t work

Before you cry for poor Eko and Penny, know they were well treated. Literally. Partygoers took turns getting Eko and Penny to do tricks in return for a few training treats and plenty of affection.

By the time the party ended I think the pups were even more exhausted than we were. I mean, Eko fell asleep like this:

That’s a new one

Planning for a party when you have pets takes a bit more effort, but it’s well worth it. Plus you save on having to pay for entertainment. Eko and Penny are always good for a show!

YES!! parties and the doodles have taken all of us time to figure out. Dash has been a terrible host and taken cheese right off the platter in front of guests… Lilly has hidden UNDER the table the entire time during a dinner party (with many guests having to move their chair to avoid her)… one party they had to be relegated to the neighbors so that I could enjoy myself. But now? We all got older and wiser. Now they are involved in the greetinsg and then, because I am calm, they are calm and they spend most of the party on my bed sleeping! It’s perfect.

  2. Please send the last photo to National Geographics… think they offer you one million bucks… or more. It was great to read about pups&guests, how have you managed the “welcome procedure”?

  3. Pat says:

Sounds like it takes a party to wear that boy out! Love that photo.

  4. Victoria says:

i love his litle growly face – i bet they were the hit of the potluck as well as you and Emily! What a nice thing to do for Emily’s co-workers – good thing your little co-workers are always there and willing to share a potluck dinner w/you!

  5. Emmadog says:

LOL, what a sleeping pose! He must have been worn out from all the concentration on food and behaving well!

  6. Me says:

    Hahaha that last pic! 😀

Our older pups can tell the instant we are planning on having someone round to our house. We might just be doing the same old cleaning, but they know someone’s coming. They just know.

  7. Geri Zeibert says:

Will, we’re all your guests dog friendly? Do you ever have people over, by necessity, who are simply frightened of or do not care for animals? If so, how do you handle that situation. Is Emily a med student? Studying to become a doctor? Somehow I had the impression she was a nurse. I wonder how you manage to wedge so much beach time into what must be a very hectic schedule. It is very easy and heart warming to see where your priorities must be. And boy, that turkey looked good! Happy Thanksgiving to your whole crew! Please, do not ever stop this blog. It always puts a smile on my face and I so look forward to every entry.

Can’t blame them for trying with the food lol Bless “wee” Eko – that is a gorgeous shot – total exhaustion but I’m sure they love being included – they are part of the family after all.

ahahah You article is great! so nice! dogs are amazing… When I saw this pics I thought about mine… I had a little dog called Naiko *.* he was like a human! incredible! I miss him so much… too much! 🙂 Have you ever been in Italy? It’s my country 🙂 GiusyR

  10. Elyse says:

It looks like great fun. And running the dog before the party is key, to me. Although Duncan still hasn’t figured out that he isn’t the reason for the party — or the food!

  11. DZ Dogs says:

    I love that sleeping pic!!!

  12. Kismet says:

The guests have to be told not to feed the dogs under any circumstance. The Day after we held a big T’giving dinner, we had a sick pup. The vet said that the day after T’giving is very busy for him because of all the fatty snacks the dogs get fed by guests.

  13. Good party strategy – AND it looks like the pups had a good time…….that last photo of Eko is totally and absolutely PRICELESS. Who needs any other entertainment than good food, good friends and two adorable pups?!?!?!

    Pam

  14. Ogee says:

That last picture…TOO FUNNY! Good dogs. 🙂

  15. Allison Gray says:

LOVE your photos! This is a great post!

  16. Wow! Looks like Eko and Penny are the perfect hosts- wore themselves ragged caring for all those guests 😉

  17. That’s for sure! Mazie likes to plant herself in the middle of the kitchen and let us all work around her. The Littles just rush around underfoot and then usually they all sucker Grandpa out of a few “treats” no matter what I say 🙂

  18. Eve says:

I was loving your blog tonight and then I hit that last picture and it was a LOL moment with I loved! So glad things went well with the potluck and Congrats to Emily.

  19. Fozziemum says:

Have missed visiting due to stuff ..always stuff but boy i laughed at this..and the last shot priceless..made my night thankyou….hahahaha 🙂 Fozziemum

  20. raisingdaisy says:

LOL That sleeping position is hysterical!! We used to have big parties and smaller gatherings all year round and our previous dog loved it and generally took it in stride. Now we’re not so interested in entertaining and neither are our friends, so we all meet out somewhere and let the places we go do all the work. 🙂 We only have people over for holidays, and Daisy’s an absolute nut. Yet another good reason to take the party elsewhere. 🙂

  21. With all of those temptations, they look like they were pretty well-behaved.

  22. Cupcake says:

Bummer about the mind control, E. Can’t win ’em all! Sleeping with your paw caught up in your cheek is a sure sign that you were worn out! Fun party!

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  23. Abbie says:

LOL, that last picture Killed. Me! And your caption was perfect! It was the voice of experience that has seen a whole lot dog-wise…and then they pull one like that when you aren’t expecting it.

  24. What a great time. Looks like someone ate too much turkey!
