Where you go matters. But so does when you go. Familiar places become new again when visited at a different time of day or year. So before winter sets in I packed the dogs into the car for a trip to Prairie Wolf Dog Preserve. Our last visit was during the height of summer. Bright blue skies, warm water and green grass covered the park. Now, with fall waning there was a whole new version of the park to explore.Rhodesian Ridgeback, blog, adventure, chicago, marking our territory, prairie wolf

Eko volunteered to run the video camera this trip

He got right to work with some on the ground reporting

Where he was joined by Penny, ever-eager for air time

Summer smells warm, feels soft and looks bright. Fall smells cold, feels hard and colors fade.

Regardless of season, Eko and Penny are ready to romp

The long grass, once thick and lush, now cracked as Eko chased Penny through the brush

In warmer months the dogs dive into the thick stalks and I can follow them only by sound. Fall offers better views into the brush so I can just see the outline of the stalking predator.

The color fades but Penny certainly doesn’t

While Penny crashed through the thicket, Eko interviewed the locals

Like the final fall leaves clinging to a tree, Penny was reluctant to go

So she stopped at the souvenir shop on our way out and picked up some new socks

A crisp romp on a crisp day had Eko and Penny all smiles

Always nice to appreciate both where you are and when you are. Dogs are quite excellent at that, so as usual, I take my cue from them.

Comments for Seasonal Energies

  1. Penny you are a trend setter… or a trend ridgeback?

  2. Victoria says:

always mud -spring or fall – in winter it might be icy – she might need some of those boots you fitted Eko for a while back – that might be a very funny friday video – Penny in boots – ha ha – make me laugh just to think about it.

  3. Emmadog says:

Penny, I love your socks, they are totally fashionable! You guys are having a fabulous time!

  4. Kismet says:

Soon they’ll be slipping on the ice.

  5. Check out those SOCKS! OMD! I want a pair TODAY! *ear licks* Noodle

  6. coastingnz says:

Eko looked thrilled to be the camera man for a change and I LOVE Penny’s new socks – good choice lol Good times had by all – including us lucky enough to follow the adventures of these two gorgeous pups.

  7. Stef says:

I know I say it all the time, but I love your posts and the comment about the socks just made me LOL at my desk! Keep it coming!!

  8. Nice socks, Penny! 🙂

  9. cdog5 says:

Such wonderful photos, Will — looks like the four-legged had a great time! 🙂

  10. Connie Taylor says:

Can’t wait to see and hear Eko’s video commentary about the trip to the park. Love how he has his “ear to the ground” for any fast breaking stories. Will we see him on the 6 0’clock news? How was Penny able to find a fashion store in the middle of no-where??

  11. Cupcake says:

Oh, P. Those “socks” are adorable. Really…. Um…. Bath-worthy. I hope we get to see some of that GoPro video…

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  12. Max Davies and Kali says:

    Will,
Your shot of Penny looking out through the brush is extraordinary. Perhaps it is instinct for her, but it reminds me of a lion stalking its prey on the African veldt. You have a real hunter on your hands I believe.

  13. Great romp. Jack has those same socks!

  14. Fall may “smell cold, feel hard and its colors may fade,” but Penny seems universally busy no matter what time of year. What a great autumnal romp! Love the camo photo. 😉

  15. What a great camera man (both of you)!
