In fact, such tactics usually lead to an all out brawl

But in her old age Penny’s learned to be a bit more subtle in her maneuvering.

Penny starts off with just her head on the pillow. She’ll stand like this for minutes at a time

Then ever so slowly she slithers up the couch

Until finally Penny snuggles to the perfect spot. She thinks she’s pretty slick!

Eko on the other hand thinks he’s the slick one for training Penny not to jump on him

That said, I have to give this round to Penny. She’s proven the old boiled-frog story true.Rhodesian Ridgeback, blog, chicago, adventure, marking our territory

If you turn up the heat slowly, they don’t realize until it’s too late!

I’m one to talk. I’m the guy who said it wouldn’t be prudent to let the dogs up with us on the chairs. Then I said, fine, just one dog. Then…you know the rest.

Call me the Frog in Chief

But Eko and I can’t be the only suckers. How have your pets slowly boiled you to get what they want?

Comments for How To Boil A Frog

  1. Imagine Penny would be a human-girl… oh that would be THE story :o)

  2. dogdaz says:

    So sweet. Dog sandwich

  3. Emmadog says:

I’d say it is the cat that is always sneaking in on us dogs at my house. He is pretty slick and usually ends up where he wanted to be.

  4. KarenS says:

Sweet Eko for doing such a great job not only training Penny, but you both as well! We’ve been camping this week out of snow and cold and boy do Bruno and Ty have us trained:). They love to cuddle with us in the bed, but after 8 years of constant work they leave us alone at the table. This is a small trailer for 2 adults and 2 ridgebacks but we are so happy that we’ve come this far. It’s amazing how we all learn to work together

Did I mention it only took 8 years!

  5. coastingnz says:

in every way possible but the easiest is with those beautiful big sad eyes they seem to be able to throw around the room willie nillie……. Great shots – they look so comfy snuggling together – you however, not so comfy lol

  6. dashlilly says:

I am laughing at this question because, truly, what haven’t the doodles slowly boiled me into doing? Furniture? Yep (to the point now that their are doodle towels that live on the sofa) A treat for Lilly in the morning before Dash gets up? Yep. and now that has of course turned into a treat for Dash when he finally gets up. Sleeping on the bed? hahahahaha was there every any other thought? Yep, the water is boiling away at my house! Great post!!

  7. Victoria says:

always – its the puppy-dog eye stare that gets me – and they can make it last until i do their bidding

  8. Ogee says:

That’s a horrible saying! You had better hope you are not reincarnated as a frog. But I applaud Penny’s ingenuity. 🙂

  9. Tietser says:

Our late Ridgeback mix would get up from the couch at exactly 9 pm, stretch, yawn, then look at us both as if to say: ‘well good night ‘or ‘sleep well’, and leave for his room where he had his bed. Then at exactly 2 am, we would hear his feet on the wooden floor across the hallway all the way to our bedroom and for about one second the feet-noice would stop because of the carpet on the bedroom floor. More silence for less than a nano-second while he was in mid-air followed by, to use your words Will, a dive-bomb and crash-landing. By this time we would both be fully awake while he settled himself at our feet for the rest of the night. Or so we hoped. For there was nothing subtle about his maneuvers while he snuggled his way up to the pillows for us to find him with all four legs streched out with one or two on either my guy’s face or on mine. Once I remember dreaming trying to pass an old truck because of the terrible diesel smell. I woke up nose to nose with Koos snoaring like an old man with his head on my husband’s pillow who he had practically kicked out of the bed.

  10. Neeka wormed her way onto our bed early on. She settled at the foot of the bed and all was well. Khoi, on the other hand, wants to sleep between our pillows. There’s nothing like a paw in your face or the back of your head in the middle of the night. If you try to move him, he fakes being asleep and is dead weight. Smart not-so-little bugger.

  11. They know us SO WELL!!!!!! (and each other too of course)

    Pam

  12. Gambler does the exact same thing.

  13. Boomdeeadda says:

Anyone who thinks they can get a pet AND sleep alone is soon shown the ropes. My goofballs shed so much, I put a kitty blanket on the end of the bed. They sneak up for snuggles, to which I usually comply. Once I’m very sleepily, I direct them to their blanket. But they’re rarely on it when the alarm goes off in the morning. Petals has created a hammock under the bed in the box spring lining, lol She crawls out of there in the morning like a camper from a tent, then stretches and demands “pick me up and carry me to my breakfast dish” At least that’s what I think she’s saying, ha!

  14. Cathy & Banjo says:

I am a real frog stew! Banjo as a puppy convinced me in just a couple of weeks that my ‘no canines on the couch’ policy was in need of amendment…and he was right. We love our 54-pound lapdog!

  15. Girls have a way with their dads (and brothers). You just can’t escape a sweet girly face like Penny’s!
