Monarchs on Parade

I have two large dogs. However, visitors could be forgiven for thinking I have no dogs and a sizeable blanket collection. Yup, that’s Eko and Penny. Like crabs with sand, my two have perfected the art of burying themselves completely  “You’re letting in cold air, please kindly re-cover my cave.”

Yup, that’s Eko and Penny. Like crabs with sand, my two have perfected the art of burying themselves completely

“You’re letting in cold air, please kindly re-cover my cave.”

Eko and Penny are blanket monsters through and through. The beasts do occasionally need to awake from hibernation for various reasons. Which means my apartment is often haunted by these apparitions:

Funny how the ghosts always seem to show up around dinner time

The pups will nudge their heads out from under the blanket, but they’re quite content to leave the flowing capes draped over their backs

So when they sit down and look at me I feel like I’m addressing a royal couple. I decided to make it official with a few royal portraits

Being King is such a burden, but Eko wears the crown well

“OMG, DOES THAT MEAN I’M QUEEN!?”

“Fetch me more treats, peasant!”

When I heard Ridgebacks were “majestic” I wasn’t aware the description would be so literal

After eating and mingling with the commoners for a bit, the royal family parades back to the couch. Apparently ruling an apartment-nation is exhausting business

Often, the pups perfectly tuck themselves right back into their blankets. But if not, a few low whines and grumbles brings the help scurrying to pamper them. What can I say? I live to serve.

Long live the King and Queen!

Comments for Monarchs on Parade

  1. Oh they are sure majestic :o) I wish the one who invented fleece blankies would find a way to make them hair-repellent. I like fleece blankies, they are perfect for dogs and easy to care but after a while they look like fur-plaids :o)

  2. OMD-too funny. Clearly I am not worthy to view such majestic beasts but it’s nice to know I’m not the only peasant around. 😉 Long live the King and Queen.

I’m so glad their Royal Highnesses have you around to see they are comfortable in the cold. And like your ghostly apparitions around the apartment at dinner time, ours appear in the middle of the night when they go from the bed to their couch and we find their fleece blankets on the ground the next morning.

  4. Victoria says:

I love the “more treats peasant” – priceless – and so wonderful they have such loyal subjects to make sure they are well fed and warm and cozy

  5. Kismet says:

No, Penny. You’re not a queen. You’re the consummate princess.

  6. Too funny! I think Dakota isn’t interested in blankets because he has so much fur! That’s one benefit of all of his shedding! lol. Cody on the other paw, is a HUGE blanket freak!

  7. Let’s be honest… Penny doesn’t need encouragement.

  8. coastingnz says:

Long Live the King and Queen – so fitting for them both. Hilarious. Love the shot with them both with their crowns, Penny almost looks cross-eyed. Think they were both happy to be back under their blankets – see you when it warms up lol

  9. hahaha Penny you are a silly queen, love it!

  10. They have you well trained. I have to say, they are more nuts about being kept warm than even my kitties are!

  11. Ogee says:

Same in my house during the winter….and mine have fur unlike your King and Queen. In summer, it’s stomach side up to ceiling fan…but come the fall, buried under the covers!

  12. DZ Dogs says:

I love your photo’s! They are so cute!

  13. Cupcake says:

Yes! Long live the royal doggies! Those are the cuddliest royal capes I ever saw!

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

Having never had short coated dogs we aren’t familiar with this phenomena. I have to say that Eko looks royal but Penny just makes me laugh. Even her “serious” look makes me think she is going to explode in another demand any second.

  15. The Royal Couple has some Loyal servants that’s for sure…….they look very regal in their capes and crowns and as Sammy would say “things are as they SHOULD be” !! We live to serve….right? HAHA

  16. That was hilarious! Great photos of the kids! John

This spring we found a K&H lectro-soft heated bed on sale for $25 — it’s probably the best money we’ve spent on Atlas! Before we broke it out once the temps dropped below freezing (we keep the house about 65° at night), he’d wake us up several times a night whining about being cold when he wiggled out of his blankets. But now he’s warm even if his blankets do slip off.

Though of course he would much rather be on the comfy couch smothered under the big fuzzy blanket…

  18. I wrap Jack up at night too and always feel bad when his covers come off during the night.
