Up until the past year, we’ve lived in small apartments and only owned a single, hand-me-down rug. The rug was usually covered with couches and a table so it wasn’t until the past few months we’ve learned Eko is a rug connoisseur. Penny pays our carpets little mind, but Eko’s interest borders on obsessed.

He absolutely must examine each rug in close detail. He’s usually on top of the carpet sniffing around before it’s even full unrolled

Eko is to carpets as a sommelier is to wine. Each of our rugs is paired with a different activity. Our living room rug is best for fireside naps.

The kitchen rug is perfect for pouting/begging

And the front room rug? Oh the front room rug!

The circular, plush rug in our front room is at the center of the sunniest area of the apartment. Each morning Eko dashes to the rug and luxuriates in the fluffy warmth. It’s his happy, fluffy place.

Well, at least for a few seconds until Penny gets a hold of him.

Penny treats the rug more like a wrestling ring

“PENNY! THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE MY HAPPY FLUFFY PLACE!”

Eko’s even gone as far as rejecting a few of the cheap bathmats and sink rugs we have. He scoffs at our audacity to purchase rugs not to his taste!

What about you guys? Anyone have a pet who is a rug aficionado?

Comments for My Rug-ed Rhodesian Ridgeback

  1. maybe Eko looked twice to find the magic spell to get a flying carpet?

  2. Victoria says:

Muffin moves the rugs by sliding her paws underneath them so she can get to the cooler hardwood floor – she is the opposite of Eko in that she prefers a hard cool surface

  3. My Ridgebacks have all treated the living room rug as the center of the universe. Treats are better there, a stolen container from the sink is brought there, they like their Kongs there. The stolen half gallon of oatmeal in a bag has to be decanted there. The jar of spoiled milk has to be opened there. And of course it is the best place to vomit up the stolen items that don’t digest well. Why? But I do know the sound of a Ridgeback dashing with a price to the living room rug. Nothing is consumed where it is found. Only there, at the center of the house universe. It’s not too bad. Three Ridgebacks over 15 years, and I’m only on my third rug.

  4. Kismet says:

Nope, Kaci and Kali prefer the cold stone floors. Don’t tell me that it’s winter. We’ve hit the 90 mark already in Arizona.

  5. Connie Taylor says:

Our Riley is not a rug person, but he does NOT want to lay on the couch or bed without a blanket on it. He prefers the fleece blankets I buy at the fabric store (on sale, of course!). He’s even gone so far as to prefer my husband’s blanket to be placed on the couch for him to sleep on. No spoiled, he just know what he likes and wants

  6. My dogs seem to prefer throwing up on the sisal rugs…does that count?

  7. Sam does like rugs and we have lots of them – everything from those bathmats to some rooms in wall to wall…………he only lies on “uncovered floors” in the summer – to cool off after being outside – the hardwood floors are his friend then!

    Pam

  8. Eko is a connoisseur! Ours just use them to keep their feet warm while eating treats in the winter.

  9. Caroline says:

I have a pillow expert. And I have a blanket expert. Chase loves pillows with a deep abiding passion. Maggie has to have “the soft” positioned just right on her couch. A bare couch with its measly microfiber and over stuffing is not enough. It must have the faux fur blanket arranged in her favorite way or she will push and pull it until it is acceptable. Should the blanket NOT be on the cushions of the couch, but dog forbid, folded on the backrest, she will stare at the couch. Get on the couch, huff, get down, look around, get up on a different part of the couch, sit down, lay down, get up while on the cushion, look down at the cushion in dismay, get off the couch, the stare at me. Until I get her favorite of the two, count them TWO, faux fur blankets and spread it out correctly. Who is training who? She is only 6 months old!

  10. Emmadog says:

We only have two rugs and they are more like doormat type rugs, then we have hardwood floors or carpeting, so we haven’t learned to be choosy.

  11. DZ Dogs says:

How do you keep your rugs clean? Are they washable?
I’m looking for a good replacement rug for our house. 🙂

  12. absolutely adorable! I love that Eko has “discriminating taste!!” Dakota prefers sleeping on our rugs to his bed!

  13. fredrieka says:

I agree with EKO it has to feel and smell right or it is not worth my body. I am too sexy for some carpets.. Just barkin at ya

  14. We have 1 area rug in the whole house and that’s the dogs’ favorite place to play. ~Samantha

  15. Tietser says:

The rug is to Kees that which a safe house is to spies. Never leave the rug. Even when invited to cruise the rest of the house, never leave the rug. To go for a walk she has to leave the rug to cross the living room in to the hall. She tiptoes on low silent feet and like a sniper she will reach the door. Returning from her walk she tiptoes back on the same low silent feet to swiftly sprint onto the rug. Never leave the rug. Same ritual when we visit family and friends. No matter where she is if there’s a rug she’s on it. Never leave the rug.

  16. Cupcake says:

What a rug-lovin’ doggie! Well done, E. We only have one rug by our door because of too much shedding! I bring all my favorite toys and treats there to play/eat. Mom vacuums every single day.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  17. Neeka and Khoi aren’t floor sleepers, but they love the area rug in the front room. When running on hardwood floors, they need a good pivot point. Carpet in the back of the house serves the same purpose. Apparently, it’s a lot more fun running in the house than outside in the yard

  18. Mine just like to ball them up before they lay on them 😉

  19. That would be gambler again, he likes to carry around all the rugs.

  20. With Sam’s penchant for chewing expensive leather items I worried he might have a go on the cowhide I bought for the living room but so far (fingers crossed) he’s been quite good. Mostly he prefers laying on sofa’s and beds to mere carpets. 😉
