We recently got to meet our favorite Chicago bear at Montrose Dog Beach. And I’m not talking about a football player. Montrose Dog Beach, Bernese Mountain Dog, Chicago

I’m talking about this loveable monster – Leo!

Yes, that Leo. The one who Penny towered over just months ago

Now, nine months old, Leo is just slightly larger than Penny

Leo is so big that Penny wasn’t quite sure how to play with him

But she did know when Leo jumps, you move! Either on your own accord, or as a result of basic physics

Leo is roughly the size of Eko and Penny combined. I don’t have the heart to tell Penny that Leo’s not even done growing yet

Penny first attempted to crash into Leo, but she discovered it was like crashing into a brick wall

She wisely decided to play keep-away instead. As Penny raced around Leo she kicked up little scoops of sand. As Leo chased her, he tore up the beach like a backhoe

Safe to say, Leo quite enjoyed his time at the beach

If the Chicago Bears do need a defensive linedog, Leo is the perfect “puppy” for the job

I used to think they called them Bernese Mountain Dogs because of where they lived. Now I’m certain the name simply references their size.

Lastly, If this post hasn’t convinced you magic is real, I don’t know what will. Because I for one can not believe you simply give a tiny puppy some food and water for a few months and then he turns into a black bear.

Comments for Monster of the Midway

  1. that must be magic or it is something in the water…. can you send a bucket of chicago water to Easy please? he would love to grow bigger than his frenemy Fuzzy the newfoundland dog :o)

  2. meANXIETYme says:

Oh my goodness! Look at little Leo almost all grown up! I love Berners and Leo is a prime example of their beauty and their joy for life. I hope Leo and Penny and Eko get to play for lots and lots of years together! Thanks for sharing those fun photos.

  3. NM says:

oh my Ghod !!!! I loved this. I felt like I was running into an old friend. That’s how familiar your posts and their characters have become. Leo is magnificient !!!!! I love Berneseses.
They are the best gentle giants. Thank you for reintroducing that cutest little fella to us again.

  4. Victoria says:

i can atest to that – a newf puppy is small at first but a bear when fully grown – muffin is that bear but so dang loveable you can’t resist her

  5. What a handsome boy…love those dogs, but they are oh, so big!

  6. Pat says:

I think it may be taking Penny a bit longer to adjust to Leo’s massiveness. But she will. Equal harassment for all. You go girl! 🙂

  7. coastingnz says:

Leo is adorable and so happy but then who wouldn’t be having some play time with your lovable kids

  8. Ha!!!! He most certainly IS a “bear” now…….where did that puppy go?????????

  9. fran godwin says:

This is so funny, n penny is the one to play the part. Love the stories n the entertainment eko n penny create. Thx Will.

  10. Poor Leo will be dropping sand from his coat for weeks. They have the most wonderful coats, but boy do they capture dirt and sand. I bet it was confusing to Penny when she grabbed a hold of his neck and came away with fur!

  11. Connie Taylor says:

How did Eko take the news of Leo no longer being a big ball of fur? You need to plan a party with Eko, Penny, Doc, Auggie, and Leo, around Memorial Day. That would fun to see them all together.

  12. Jesse says:

So cute as puppies and beautiful when they get older too! To me they look like a big black, brown and white Golden retriever haha.

  13. Wendy says:

Wow! Leo is magnificent! I hope his obedience training is going well!

  14. Elyse says:

Oh, I do remember our Charlie making that transition from little furball to huge hulking Berner bear! They are such sweet beautiful dogs. But Penny better watch out. When other dogs roughhoused with Charlie after he got to be about a year, he would just stop and the others would plow into him. It was a 20-dog pileup at the park!

  15. 😯 I can’t believe that’s baby Leo! I also can’t believe that with that fur, his Mom and Dad willingly let him near sand. My Mom would lose her mind! *ear licks* Noodle

  16. OMG Leo has turned into one handsome giant!!!! So glad we got to see him again 🙂

  17. Kismet says:

Trust this Arizona bird. Da Bears be bad again this year. Cubbies, different story for a change.

  18. Emmadog says:

Love those dogs, they are so gorgeous. They are all over in Europe, not as much here.

  19. hahaha Leo is so handsome and so much fun.

  20. That’s one gigantic 4-legged back hoe. But it looks like all paws had a blast on the beach. Happy weekend. 😉
