Does Your Dog Have a Favorite Dog?

We all have our preferences when it comes to pups. From Great Danes to terriers, from hairless to massive coats, dogs come in all shapes, sizes and energy levels. But we’re not the only ones with preferences. My two do seem to gravitate towards other Ridgebacks, but I think Rhodesians might only be
We all have our preferences when it comes to pups. From Great Danes to terriers, from hairless to massive coats, dogs come in all shapes, sizes and energy levels. But we’re not the only ones with preferences. My two do seem to gravitate towards other Ridgebacks, but I think Rhodesians might only be Penny’s second favorite breed. Her first? German Shorthaired Pointers.

Puppy Penny grew up spending a ton of time with Dutch, my brother’s first GSP

When she wasn’t with Dutch, Penny was on Dutch

Penny’s affinity for Dutch carried over to every pointer we met. She’d gleefully track them down at the park

And lead them on wild chases across the beach

Her love for Pointers made her immediately enamoured with Doc, my brother’s adopted senior

Wherever Doc romps, Penny romps

We’ve seen a lot more pointers around recently and Penny is always delighted

Penny’s yet to meet a pointer she didn’t love

Though I can’t say the reverse is always quite true…

German Shorthaired Pointers are a perfect match for Penny. They have boundless energy and they are singularly focused on fetching their ball. Which means Penny knows she can steal that ball and lead them on an endless chase!

What about you guys? Do your dogs have an affinity for any particular breed/type of pup?

I think Penny is envious of their adorable spots. 🙂 My dogs’ favorite dogs are dogs that leave them cookies…and don’t expect to share.

  2. I agree they are fabulous pups (and a GSP won westminster YAY!!!). Easy loves shi tzu’s I always fear he will swallow one of this small guys once :o) Sadly Easy is not Vizsla-compatibel, since he met his enemy Fripouille, all Vizslas are enemies… seems I can forget to get a photo of Easy together with one of his hungarian cousins :o(

  3. Melanie says:

Your post is so true! Our Ridgebacks most enjoyed playing with Boxers and large Standard Poodles because both breeds like to chase and box I think.

  4. Sammie has been enamored with boxers ever since meeting Boomer, my boxer that lives at home with my parents. And he seems to enjoy seeing her more than me when we visit (a first!). They have very similar play styles 🙂

  5. My best friend was a lab mix, but she moved away. Now I play equally with all dogs in my neighborhood. Also I’m about to meet Mom’s friend’s German Shepherd puppy as soon as he’s big enough. I can’t wait to jump on his head.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  6. Emmadog says:

She does look good with the Pointers. We don’t have favorite types really. For me, I don’t like dogs a lot larger than me, Bailie doesn’t seem to care about size at all.

  7. Kismet says:

Is there anything like a longhair pointer?

  8. coastingnz says:

Loved your kids already and love them even more now I know of Penny’s love for GSPs – no bias at all on my part lol

  9. Sam tends to be happily drawn to anything with legs. Dogs, cats, tiny kids…makes no difference to him although lately he’s developed a bizarre upset about a huge male Chessie in our neighborhood with mom he’s never had any kind of incident. Neither of them are happy the other is around. 😉

  10. fredrieka says:

RILEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just say her name even when I am sound asleep I wake up and am ready to go

  11. Peita Davis says:

an article popped up about a big charity swim in the lake there, (I am in Australia) so it’s freezing, all I can think of is where’s Penny?? the photo’s are of Lady Gaga…….where is Penny??? chasing GSP’s

  12. Our Sally loved any dogs – but she was particularly fond of Borzois. One, Rudy, was her boyfriend…but she new a couple of others and she loved racing with them. She always lost, but she loved it.

  13. fran godwin says:

Well, i m not sure, i have 6 dogs n they get along, play tug n sleep with each other. I adopted in 2010 from my local shelter, Trouble a schnauzer mix about 47 lbs, spanky a shitzu mix at the same time for a playmate. Then came Tobey, full blood Malteze my friend asked me to take about 7 lbs. Then rescued a dog from vet but so matted up n skinny, we did not know what he was, not neutered, he is Ranger n now we know he is a Bichon Frese, then adopted 2, brother n suster from the pound, chihuahuas named salt n pepper. Alll love each other

  14. I’m with Penny, I like GSP’s too. Those photos are fantastic!

  15. The Girls are hit and miss on who they like. They have a mini schnauzer that walks by that really upsets Anne but she “screams” and cries the whole way up the block until she gets to our yard and I think that gets Anne upset. Mazie doesn’t like other Labs that are black but I think that comes from her abuse days. They love the “pack” of 5 goldendoodles that walk by the house every day though and run the fence when they walk by.

  16. You got great taste Penny.

  17. […] Penny certainly made a splash during her introduction to a German Shorthaired Pointer we’ve never met before. Penny kind of has a thing for Pointers. […]
