On a beach littered with countless sticks, Eko grabs one and takes flight

Inevitably Penny gives chase, desperate for the stick. Not any stick – that stick. Eko won’t give up the prize though, and eventually Penny digs up a stick of her own

At which point Eko discards his worthless twig…

And charges after Penny for her invaluable prize

Eko patiently stalks his prey…

Then pounces on the fallen bounty

Undeterred, Penny launches a diversionary strike

Then swipes the stick and the endless battle continues!

So why go through all the trouble of chasing, wrestling and battling for a stick when there are sticks aplenty?

My theory? Because it’s a lot more fun!

Comments for The Stick Is Always Greener

  1. THAT stick is a very important part :o) it must be THAT stick even if it is under a pile of firewood … although there are 87 other sticks… probably not only humans have THE ONE :o)

  2. nm says:

This is why dogs or animals as part of Nature teach us so much about the human condition. It is hard to not reflect upon ourselves and our relationships with others…what an amazing teaching moment.
    Thank you for reminding..
    Have a great weekend.

  3. dashlilly says:

YES!!! This is all so true. When Dash and Lilly stayed with friends who also have a doodle–no dog ate out of his or her own bowl. By the end of the weekend my friends and created a whole philosophy: “it’s always better in the other bowl.” We still say it to each other and I still see this behavior with Dash and Lilly!

  4. nerdgrl (Kim S.) says:

It’s not so much sticks with Amara, but ANYTHING BELONGING TO DADDY. Daddy has a tendency to put things where she can easily access them…shoes, papers, computer cords, the bluetooth pouch, even, I hate to say it, dirty clothes on the floor, and today, his wireless mouse. It’s a game with her..and usually early in the morning when I’m trying to get ready for work. It’s not so much a question of training her as it is HIM.

  5. C Taylor says:

Bentley will chase after Riley to get the frisbee l just threw to him. She will then play keep-away and make him chase after her. This can be good, because Riley gets more exercise this way. Ifl l throw the extra frisbee, she wants that one! (dropping the first one, of course). When it comes to feeding or snack time, she will wait till Riley has finished eating to check the area for any tidbits he might have left (that rarely happens).

  6. Shalini says:

Yes! This! 🙂 haha! I spent so much money buying two of everything when I had my foster child, Midnight. It was no use. My two had a funny friendship 🙂 https://somedogsomehuman.wordpress.com/2013/09/07/sneaky-saturday-tail-of-two-black-dogs/

  7. Kismet says:

It’s the same with human siblings.

  8. Neither Neeka nor Khoi are stick/ball dogs. Khoi is happiest chasing a duck, goose, or chicken (with an occasional rabbit thrown in). Neeka just focuses on digging for hidden food. However, if either really want to get the other’s attention, a stick or rawhide is ideal; then it’s game on. Mad minute ensues and the original lure is discarded. It’s crazy when my grandpuppy visits. Zuma is a border collie who is obsessed with balls. Khoi will sometimes scoop in snap one up in order to coerce her into chasing him. Zuma is smarter than that though; she just finds another ball. Love watching the mind games they play.

  9. I guess it’s more fun to chase a stick that’s running down the beach than one that’s just sitting on the sand. Fun is all doggies care about.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  10. Jo Rhodes says:

I buy two of every toy. I’m an idiot! No matter that the second toy is within easy reach—the yelling, growling and most pathetic whining you’ll ever hear comes from two pups having an argument that goes: Giveme the toy! No! I had it first! But I need THAT toy! No! It’s like having two5 year olds.

  11. fredrieka says:

Sticks are the best. There are plenty of possiblities here at my house.

  12. Heh, heh. It’s terrific to watch your pups enjoying the chase as much as the prize. 😉

  13. As you say, the grass is always greener…

  14. Emmadog says:

We play stick games too. Mom says there are a lot of sticks, but only a few are “quality” sticks and they are hard to find.

  15. Merry Band of Hooligans says:

We do this at our house too!! Except is isn’t just sticks, there are bones and chuck-it balls and rope toys that we drag out and challenge each other for!! It is so much fun! We don’t care about anything else when the other pup has something they like, WE MUST HAVE IT!

Thanks for sharing, it is good to know these aren’t the only crazies around. But…crazy or not, we are so very happy!

  16. of course that is much more fun, much more fun to tease.
