The Great Ridgeback Migration

For many a month, the King and Queen of Blankets luxuriated in an uninterrupted reign.  A royally warm pair of pups On cold winter days the monarchs huddled next to each other And on colder winter days, my couch became a lasagna of dogs and blankets layered on top of one

But as of late, the throne is empty. The King and Queen have temporarily abdicated. In order so that they may participate in a annual migration rivaling that of the African savannah.

From the cold recesses of the back of the apartment, Eko and Penny trekked their way to our front room.

The windows in front of the apartment make it colder in the winter, but the return of the bright sun turns the room into a pup paradise

The pups practically melt into the shag carpet

No blanket can compare with the warm blanket of the sun

Your brave wildlife photographer, and his accompanying shadow, are told to scram

With a wink, Eko sends me back to inform his subject he shall resume his reign in the fall

Until then, if I need the pups at any point throughout the day, I know exactly where to find them. As soon as they figure out how to use dogs as solar panels, I’m never going to have to pay an electric bill again.

    Sun worshippers

  2. I’m waiting for the golden sun blanket… but it will not come…. seems I have to use my old stinky blankie with the 87 holes for a while :o)

  3. Victoria says:

nothing more relaxing than watching your pup worship the sun!

  4. Audrey says:

Did I see vague sign of the “Old man” in Mr. Eko in those pics? Don’t tell him I said that, I meant just a little bit of that old man look!

  5. Ogee says:

Ours were happily baking on the outside stone in 85-degree temps yesterday, but at night I have to turn the fan on and freeze while they do tummy-up to the cooling whirl? Whats up with that?! Dogs!!

  6. Kismet says:

It would be a lot simpler if Penny and Eko just flew south for the winter like we birds do.

  7. Ditto with cats! If there’s sun in the house, that’s where I know I’ll find Sam…….must be a magnetic attraction thing!

Sam and Dean are the same way. On the rare occasion we reach the 90s in Boston there are some strange arguments afoot. We want to go out. OK! Pant, pant, pant. Are you hot? * With the most blissful faces you’ve ever seen* OH, Yes. we’re much too hot. Pant, Pant, Pant. (ice cube crunch) Do you want to go inside? Oh, NO. No.NO. It’s better to be too hot.
(They are black. They can only be outside for 15minute intervals and the fight to get them inside is ridiculous.)
    I think we’re genetically related.

Nikki is the same as your two.In the winter she spends a great deal of time in the kitchen where the radiant heating comes up through the floor.Ahh bliss. When the nice weather arrives she starts the migration around the house to catch all the sunspots. As I write this she has already demanded that I open the door so she could go out,go wee wee roll around on the grass, sniff around and end by flopping down on the driveway which must be boiling by now. What a life!

  10. We got home last night after spending the weekend on the NorCal coast. We had 40 degree nights and beautiful 70 degree days. Lots of warm blankets to wrap up in after lizard hunting in the sun (the rattlesnakes did not participate), followed with hiking in the creek through ice cold water. Neeka and Khoi experienced all the joys of springtime in three days. Now it’s back to basking on the hot driveway in the 90 degree evenings of the Sierra Foothills. I really wish I was a dog. My dogs at least.

Prince Atlas has been using us peasants to move his memory foam bed from the sun to the shade and back again on this lovely spring days. He’s sure got us wrapped around his paw!

  12. coastingnz says:

Haha Will – sometimes I think you have too much time on your hands lol Watch out Spring is here for you and Summer is just around the corner – the kids will want more than just lazing in the sunshine as it streams through the window……… lol

  13. Emmadog says:

I love baking in the sun in my front window bed too, but at some point, I get so hot and pant so heavily, I have to hop down and cool off in the shade for a bit!

  14. If Sam can’t have the sofa, he migrates from his bed to the warmest sun puddle too. Creatures of the realm. 😉

  15. Blankets are fine and dandy, but nothing beats the good old sun pond. Yay, spring! Yay front windows! Yay street naps!

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  16. Don’t put those blankets away just yet, I think a snow storm is coming.
