Eko taught me the regal, loyal, and steady wisdom of a king. In my grief, Penny teaches me the mischievous,  mirthful and irrepressible wisdom of a jester. I stand over an abyss, precariously balanced on a wavering bridge. Only a fool would suggest the best way for a man with unsteady feet to survive an unstable bridge is to dance across it. But Penny does exactly that. So I lift my eyes up from the darkness and instead look at my foolishly wise hound. We twirl and spin and revel in a chaotic choreography. And for a time there is no darkness and there is no bridge. Just a boy and his dog, dancing in the park. Both on leash and in life, Penny pulls me forward.

  1. the most famous kings listened to the wisdom of jesters once… and none of them failed… It’s great that your whirlwind girl is on your side… if someone can bring a smile on your or Emily’s face then it is Penny…

  2. Deborah Schmidt says:

Penny will guide you into a happy future. She had the best life teacher. Eko.

  4. Ogee says:

Oh, Will. My heart breaks for you, Emily and Penny this morning. I have been away and just read our last three weeks of posts. Tears flow. Your journey through loss and grief is all too familiar – and yet, unique to you alone. I’m glad that you have Emily and Penny and your beautiful words to help you find your way back to light. And you will. In time. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t shed a tear for my sweet Bella – but like your beloved Penny, my Jackson has pulled me forward. The music I hear now? Of wrestling and whining and playing with his brother, adopted in September. The one I wasn’t ready for – but Jackson was. And he is healing my heart in unexpected ways. We never forget, but, in time – we turn to the joys instead of the sorrows. You are on the path. And my heart is with you. I’m so sorry you had to take this journey so soon. I’m so sorry that I did not read it sooner. XO, Ogee.

Penny just may be a jester through and through. She knew to get you outside to have a great playtime while putting a big smile on your face this morning!! (That was so nice to see). Thanks for a great start to this weekend

  8. Francesca says:

Will, I too, have been away from reading your posts for a bit. My heart broke for you when I learned of Eko’s passing. For a moment, I returned to my dark days when my first “real dog” Pino passed last December.

I’m glad you have Emily and Penny to get you through. The days will become brighter and your heart will mend, Will.

    My sincere condolences…

  10. Penny knows what YOU need………..and you know what Penny needs…….I do believe the dark clouds are parting for you Will – slowly but surely….!

  11. TheRidgebackLife says:

It just dawned on me why Penny and Khoi are so much alike; I think it’s the black dot on their tongues which must somehow be linked to a crazy gene.
It’s good seeing you smile with your little tornado. Have a wonderful weekend.

  12. coastingnz says:

Bless you Penny for your huge heart and helping put a smile back on “Dad’s” face.

  13. P., you are the best medicine for whatever ails us. Well done.

    Love and licks,

  14. Lynn Wolford says:

Oh Will, how wonderfully sweet to read your post and watch your video. And God bless little Penny. It made me think of something — when you brought Eko home, you had some quiet “alone” time to really get to know him and develop such a strong bond. Then dear little Penny came along. The “Eko and Penny” frolicking adventure started, I imagine, the minute they laid eyes on one another. It was love and fun at first site. This time you have right now may give you an opportunity for some quiet “alone” time with Penny. I’m laughing, because I don’t believe the word “quiet” is in Penny’s vocabulary. I’m so glad she’s there for you — I don’t think you could have any better medicine to help your broken heart. Thanks so much for sharing.

  15. Victoria Coleman says:

happy dog -happy boy! Good for you – have a great weekend

  16. Emmadog says:

Penny is a lot like Bailie. All her silly immature antics keep the family amused…sometimes frustrated, but mainly amused and it is good for helping with the pain of a loss.

  17. It’s so hard watching someone you care about grieve a grief that you know hurts like hell. Thinking about you and the family, Will. -Samantha

  18. Kismet says:

She reminds me of Kali, the Klass Klown after we lost Kyla.

  19. Ana Teresa Camara says:

    Joy in motion! so beautiful!
Penny is keeping all the love and the attention of her daddy Will
    Good to see!

  20. She is such a joy to watch!

  21. A lovable jester can unburden a heavy heart, even for just a few minutes. Revel in her tomfoolery-it will no doubt lighten your load.

  22. That sweet girl!!!! ((((hugs)))))

  23. Jess says:

    How is Penny doing?
