“We can easily forgive a child who is afraidĀ of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light.”

I was once a child, afraid of the dark. Then a puppy showed me how to light the world. When I lost Eko my world went dark again. This time I embraced the darkness, hiding from the world. How could I go outside? How could I smile? How could I step into the light without Eko?

Who knows how long I would have wallowed in my misfortune? But to wallow one must stay still. Penny Mayhem would allow no such thing. Ā She dragged me back into the light (at Ā light-speed) and reminded me just how lucky I truly am.

Comments for [VIDEO] Down to My Last Penny

  1. I’m glad she is there… like the Penny-lane where you can walk on together, the Penny in your loafer (that was an awful trend I know) and the Penny for your thoughts… she is there on your side and you are not alone…. just if she turns into Penny-wise you should look for your running shoes …. hugs to you all…. and yes, I’m sure her dream was about Eko…

  2. KarenS says:

The world really does need more Pennys. Those that help us through the hard times and remind us of the joys in this world. To help us find that laughter.

Like Penny, my Ty is a goof ball, and sometimes I wonder just why I brought this nut case & master counter surfer home to become a little brother to our Bruno almost 10 years ago. So different in temperament those two. This video and the more recent blogs remind me why.

Hugs to your girls and to you Will.

  3. Rose Frame says:

It was beautiful to see you love Penny & her gift you with a smile.

  4. An “LED bright” dog is a great way for letting us realize what blessings we have in life and for putting a smile in our heart.

  5. stephumina says:

My gosh Penny is such a little darling!
Watching her nag Emily for attention by closing the laptop! That is a Nala move to a T!!

How is it that they know exactly what we need?

    Bless our little darlings šŸ™‚

  6. Connie Taylor says:

“A Penny saved, is a Penny earned”, so the saying goes. She has saved you from darkness and has earned the love and admiration from all of us too!!! Happy Veterans Day (yes it’s a policeman emoji, couldn’t find a military symbol)

  7. Oh Will…….. lovely video AGAIN and I’d say that you have learned that your Penny is truly a LUCKY PENNY because she has helped you get back into the light – between her and Emily, you are on the road to more fun………………….and love.

    Hugs, Pam

  8. Victoria Coleman says:

Yeah Penny – keep Will moving! And i like Emily’s new haircut – looks good! And i liked Penny trying to get her to close her laptop. Have a great weekend

  9. meANXIETYme says:

There is no light without darkness. Feeling the darkness allows us to appreciate the light. I’m so glad Penny is there to help you step into the light every day. I know the light is where Eko lives, so keep seeking it. Much love to you and your family. And again, thanks for sharing the hard times as well as the good times.

  10. cafall says:

I felt that way when I lost Sam – and I still have days where I wish he was still with me. Still thinking of all of you – and here’s to brighter days!

  11. Emmadog says:

Even though life is not as you had planned, never forget how fortunate you were to have had Eko in your life. No matter how long he would be around, it would never be long enough. Once needs to be grateful for every day of life and for sharing life with the ones we love. There are no guarantees for tomorrow. My mom loves this quote because it really is true. Yesterday is HISTORY, tomorrow is a MYSTERY, but today is a GIFT. That is why it is called PRESENT.

  12. T&S says:

I was wondering how Penny was these days… somehow this video comforts me. Our pups are just a year apart, and our female is very attached to our male, maybe a little too much. I always asked myself: could she live without him?
Now, seeing Penny, I think it would be hard, but maybe she could… she has a character like Penny, sweet and goofy.
We share your loss somehow. Having two RRs of our own, we can imagine the pain you are going through, because its what we fear the most.
We are thankful for your every post… it is like a guide to a light…
to all of you! (One heart is for Eko, because he remains in our hearts… )

  13. Eve says:

Love Penny more everyday!! As she gets you moving or makes quit what you are doing whether you wanted too or not!! Her nudging the laptop is priceless in itself and reminders to take some time to love the one your are with! WTG Penny!!

  14. Melody says:

WTG Penny…live life and remember the great times! Our Scout is your Penny Will and Emily. A happy gonlucky crazy dog will always lift your spirit and keep you going.

    Wishing all the best!

  15. Jo Rhodes says:

Penny! You’re the best luck penny ever! You’re doing a great job of getting your dad out of bed and into the rain. Wait, you played in the rain?! Maybe if there’s no soap it’s ok. Good for you.
There was a bit of mayhem here in your honour. I bought yarn to make my boys sweaters ( I’m a terrible knitter but love make you do strange things).–Ask Will. I’m sure he’ll vouch for me) I asked the lady to roll my enormous amount yarn into a ball. Sam and Dean got a hold of the yarn and I had to spent 3 days unraveling and re-rolling this blue mess into a ball. And now I knit.
Thank you Penny for being so rambunctiously beautiful. I kiss your head.
    Good girl!
Love, hugs and a mischievous glint in the eye,
    Jo, Sam and Dean

  16. Oh, Penny! Your doggie smile jumps right out of the screen and onto our faces. We can see how much love and happiness you bring to your mom and dad. And how much light you bring to the world. Well done, sweetie! xo

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake and Mom

  17. Geri Zeibert says:

At 1:40 PM today Nov.11 2016, by my own hand, I lost the center of my world, my beautiful girl, my Orflaith. When the light left her eyes, she left me in darkness. I have no Penny in my life. I have a Karma to care for, so I must keep breathing. But Karma is old and confused, she is certainly no Penny. What I have dreaded for weeks is upon me. My grief is a living, clawing thing. It is inescapable. I miss her terribly and she has only been gone for under 10 hours. You are perhaps the only person I know who can understand this. Your blog is now my lifeline and I have never met you but I feel that we share a sense of desperation. Penny has brought you to the surface. I hope that she can do something similar for a fan she has never known.

  18. fredrieka says:

This is why they use pups as service dogs for those with PTSD there is something about the love they share a quick wag of the tail. Nothing like it

  19. This makes me sooooooooooooooooooooo happy and I need this advice myself right now…THANK YOU!!! (((hugs))))

  20. You have done such a great job vocalizing the pain that follows the loss of a dog. ((hugs)) Samantha

P.S. I love the spot on Penny’s tongue!

  21. Penny you are such a ray of sunshine!!!

  22. […] And what better guide through hell than my little hellhound? […]
