The Delusions of a Man Unwilling to Admit The Size of His Puppy

Zero is only six months old. Aw, such a puppy! He's lived with us for only four months. Aw, such a short amount of time! Not even enough time for Chicago to change seasons, so it's nice to know I still have plenty of time to enjoy my little baby puppy. I took a few photos yesterday to capture these precious moments while he's still not much bigger than the day we brought him home. Look, you can barely tell which of these photos was taken which day.

Rhodesian Ridgeback, Puppy, Marking Our Territory, Zero Well, I mean, I must have grabbed a different Amazon box by accident, but you know what I’m talking about. Check out my tiny guy playing with his lion – Rhodesian Ridgeback, Puppy, Marking Our Territory, Zero Cheap plush toys! You put them in the wash one time and just look how they shrink! Ridiculous. My little lion-dog is certainly still little. Rhodesian Ridgeback, Puppy, Marking Our Territory, Zero Hm. Must have had a different lens on my camera by accident. Silly me. What other explanation could there be? Rhodesian Ridgeback, Puppy, Marking Our Territory, Zero Ok, fine, I’ll admit it. Like James Bond, Zero sometimes uses a stunt double. That has to be why he looks so different…right? Very strange. In any event, I have to go make a doctor’s appointment because it’s not just my camera that’s been acting up. As time passes I seem to get more and more fatigued just from carrying my little puppy up the stairs. Old age, I guess.

  1. Piglove says:

4 months – what is that now his teenage years? Snorts with piggy laughter. He’s my size now – definitely taller for sure. XOXO – Bacon

  2. Zero sure is growing into those big paws and has filled in some of his puppy wrinkles too.

  3. Laurie says:

    That is adorable!!!

  4. Emmadog says:

Puppies grow like weeds and before you know it, they look like dogs!

  5. Happy half-birthday Zero :o) Phenny can do the stairs alone now… howlelujah… it was a challenge to carry him up and down…. he only wants a lift-boy when he has to go out for a pee break at 4 am…. and that’s the time everybuddy is in the mood to carry 55lbs around :o)

  6. Tracie McGuire says:

It’s SO crazy but we had that same thing happen with our puppy Demi! By 6 months she was the size of her brother Zeus. But Zeus is 3 years older than Demi! We were confused so we brought our little angel to the vet and discovered she weighed 90 pounds! Now at 1 1/2 years old, our baby is 115 pounds! She’s huge, no getting around it!

  7. He’ll be getting into those insolent teenage months shortly. Always a real treat.

  8. The paws do look slightly less ridiculous on him now, but still a ways to go before they fit.

  9. I feel like they are “puppies” for a month – max.

  10. Who needs a gym when you have a puppy to get you in shape?

  11. Glad to hear I’m not alone. We’ll have to start a support group for this affliction.

  12. TheRidgebackLife says:

Khoi is an almost-3-year old puppy. He got bigger, his fangs got longer and stronger, but his mindset is still six months old (minus the tendency to destroy things). Zero will be a puppy for a long time.i doubt he will ever grow to those wrinkles.

  13. Kismet says:

Whatever his size, he’s always PennyPecked-the non-bird version of henpecked.

  14. Jo Rhodes says:

We tried to warn you about those paws! You’re gonna need a bigger boat.
Hugely hopeful, Jo, Sam and Dean

  15. Piglove says:

Mom says she remembers my terrible twos. Shivers. That was back in the day. She calls me her sweet Bacon. For a while during my terrible twos, she called my deviled ham. Does that tell you anything? Snorts with piggy laughter. XOXO – Bacon

  16. Connie Taylor says:

Now you know how true that old phrase is “They grow up so fast !”. And Like Ms Penny, he will be a puppy forever ‼️

  17. We pet parents can talk ourselves into all kinds of delusions when it comes to our “LITTLE GUYS”…….David insisted that Teddy hadn’t grown “much” since we got him in February but the weighing scales tell a different tale! No matter what – I think we always think of them as our “little kids”……even when they aren’t!

    Hugs, Pam

  18. coastingnz says:

Not sure whose nose has grown – Zeros or yours…… lol Zero will always be your little boy though. Ziggy is 9 years old – our puppy….. our little boy – the little fella. Nico is 12 years old, my baby, my lump, the big fella. Nothing changes – much…….

  19. I’m hoping the very same thing about those wrinkles. I know his puppy size can’t stick around but those just might be able to.

  20. That pecking order is firmly established for life.

  21. Haha we might need a boat for each paw at this rate!

  22. Luckily you didn’t call him lunch!

  23. Fast is right, I’m not sure where he found the time to get so big.

  24. Very true. Many things have changed and will change, but your puppy is always your puppy.

  25. I feel you pain. My Kloe while twice zeros age surpeised me with how big she got and so fast. I think (hope!) she is finally done growing having hit the 80 pound mark. Enjoy your pup and watch your back when lifting

  26. Victoria Coleman says:

they grow up so fast – but they still think they are pups for several years (at least in my house)

  27. Karen Boone says:

He grew into his feet, handsome fella!

  28. Judy Petitto says:

Amazing! I got quite a kick out of these photos.Zero sure is growing up fast! Starting to loose his puppiness and just becoming so handsome!Enjoy the journey.Seems to happen over night.

  29. Ogee says:

Time passes too quickly. But don’t worry. He may be bigger, but he’ll still be in puppy trouble for quite a while!

  30. Zero just keeps getting more and more handsome .

  31. Laura Leite says:

Too cute! The head growing first makes them even more irresistible. He looks so strong and fit and you will be together a long time. One day at a time lived with joy and in its fullest is forever.
    Thanks!

  32. My other guys usually hit their awkward stage around this age, but he just skipped that entirely. I’m interested to see if/when he hits that gangly stage.

  33. I hate how fast they grow! I feel like you need to take pictures every single day sometimes when they are little!

  34. Wow 6 months already, time sure does fly

  35. Ha! Oh, Z. You’re the perfect size no matter what size it is.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  36. Shalini says:

Sweet boy 🙂 He’ll always be your baby puppy! My 6 year old man is still my baby boy!!

  37. Yes and definitely have the eyes checked while you’re at the doctors. Wow…he sure has grown up right before our eyes!
