There’s no one right way to raise a dog or a kid. But I’ve found the best way for me to raise a dog and a kid is together. It’s not always easy, but the worthwhile things rarely are. We’re off this weekend for the first of two family road trips. Hope everyone enjoys the Fourth, we’ll catch up with you when we get back.

wow – Lincoln has the most beautiful smile – such a sweet boy to his 4 legged brothers – great video – i love to see the 3 of them playing, learning and living side by side by side. Thanks for sharing

  3. Michael Bondor says:

Such a marvelous training video! Constant training, keep treats stashed around the house so they are always at hand when needed. constant supervision.

Will, these videos are incredibly helpful! Please keep it up!

  4. coastingnz says:

oh my gosh I can’t believe how big Zero is! Happy 4th of July and happy road trip and holidays – and of course safe travels for you all.

  5. Kismet says:

Good going. A lot of learning going on. In a year or two, Lincoln will have learned to be as calm as Penny.

  6. RidgebackLife says:

I know you’re getting tired of hearing it, but Lincoln is the most adorable boy! And the way you’re working with him and the dogs is fabulous. So many people just say their dogs would never hurt their children, without actually teaching every moment, are only asking for trouble. The bond you have created is heartwarming. Thanks for setting the example. Happy 4th and safe travels! Can’t wait to hear about your trip.

  7. chris says:

Good for you in taking the things say negatively and putting a positive spin on it. I was told the same thing with raising 4 german shepherds with my daughter. I listened to them and I just continued doing what I was doing (pretty much the same things you are doing) and knew that some people just would never get it. Now the best saying the day is this one “The more i meet people, the more I like my dogs”.

  8. stef luciano says:

Fabulous installment today! Just love watching them all grow together! Have a wonderful holiday and safe travels!

  9. Genevieve says:

That knock-down / jump over was impressive! So much learning going on over there. And so much fun!

  10. Emmadog says:

We think it’s great raising them all together and teaching the to get along and be respectful.

  11. christina says:

wow! lots of work goes into this process. you and emily have done an amazing job of getting them used to Link and getting Link used to them. Link is just the sweetest little boy! hope y’all have an awesome 4th elebration this week!

  12. Brye Vankerk says:

How do you get your ridgebacks to be okay having their nails done? I have a new ridgeback puppy and trying to get her used to it so it is so much easier. I love your blog. You are a fantastic writer.

  13. Will (MarkingOurTerritory.com) says:

Luckily mom was there to save the day!

  14. Will (MarkingOurTerritory.com) says:

    Thanks so much, you too!

  15. Will (MarkingOurTerritory.com) says:

Haha I do appreciate that people are concerned, but I also strongly feel the safest thing I can do for both my dogs and my children is to raise them together rather than apart

  16. Will (MarkingOurTerritory.com) says:

Thanks so much! It’s been a delicate balance but an important one for all of us. It’s my responsibility to make sure these guys all know how to be safe and happy around each other so we can make the most of our shared lives.

  17. Will (MarkingOurTerritory.com) says:

    *shudders*

  18. Will (MarkingOurTerritory.com) says:

He has to be done growing…right???

  19. Will (MarkingOurTerritory.com) says:

Thanks a lot! Glad you think so

  20. Will (MarkingOurTerritory.com) says:

Thank you! Sharing the experience is one of the best ways for me to internalize what I need to be teaching both the dogs and Lincoln. Plus taking videos gives us additional practice time together

  21. Will (MarkingOurTerritory.com) says:

Thanks so much! It’s a work in progress, but it’s certainly progress. Hope you enjoy the 4th as well.

  22. Will (MarkingOurTerritory.com) says:

Start them early and often! Easiest way to do it is to desensitize them to the sound first. Every time you turn on the grinder give your girl a high value treat. Do that a bunch of times before you even consider trimming her nails so that she has a positive association with the sound. Work your way incrementally up to doing one toe, than two toes, etc and you’ll be on your way

  23. What a great video…..the three “kids” in the house are buddies and pals and that’s just so IDEAL. You and Emily worked hard on it but it certainly paid off….well done Mom and Dad!

    Pam

  24. Brye says:

Thank you! It is a slow journey 🙂 It has really helped us as we decided to move to the Ridgeback breed from airedales. I just love our new pup. She is crazy and from Chicago 🙂
