Not all dogs are created equal, and that’s a great thing. Especially for a pup like Penny who has a lot of different interests. With summer in full swing, the beach is packed with dogs of every stripe. Penny, my social butterfly, makes sure to spend time with each and every one. Rhodesian Ridgeback, puppy, chicago, montrose dog beach, adventure

While relaxing in the shallows, Penny prefers to chat up the small pups

But small dogs aren’t made for wild water romps

So Penny moves on to play with the lab-mixes and other water lovers

Back on land, the big bruisers are the most fun to wrestle with. But the big guys often lack speed, so when Penny wants to zoom…

She chases after the best in the business – the greyhounds!

In a sprint, Penny has no hope of catching her pal, but eventually her persistence helps her tire out the speedster

Of all these great friends, there’s one pup who holds the title of “best friend.” Tripp, a Rhodesian Ridgeback a few months older than Penny, is a sweet and playful pup who matches up with her perfectly.

Tripp bounding full speed might scare off some other pups, but it’s Penny’s favorite sight

In fact, you can see in Tripp’s eyes that he knows Penny’s a nut!

The two love to bounce off each other up and down the sand

Even Eko gets in on the romp. It’s only anecdotal evidence, but it really seems like both Eko and Penny gravitate towards playing with other Ridgebacks

All smiles from the best pals

After a long winter when the beach was often empty, it’s great to have so many friends to hang/swim/wrestle/chase/romp with. It’s going to be an awesome, friend-filled summer!

Comments for A Dog for Every Occasion

  1. What a fun, fun post!! What a little flirt Penny is!!!!! Gotta say that Tripp looks rather terrified of her lol!!!!

  2. wow Tripp looks impressing! I love that even their ears can talk… and they say they have tons of fun :o)

  3. Neither Jack or Maggie are very ‘playful’ anymore, but this reminds me of our pup Sally – she was like Penny, a social butterfly…her best friend (boyfriend really) was a Borzoi…they were a site together! There is evidence that dogs do gravitate towards their own kind – I was just reading something about it last week – I’ll see if I can remember where.

  4. Emmadog says:

So much fun! Mom finds it funny how we are so “rude” to each other. We cut each other off, bump into each other, cut each other off, but it doesn’t seem to phase us at all.

  5. Found it – see the last two questions on this page: http://thebark.com/content/alexandra-horowitz-canine-mindseeker?page=2
Used this as a resource for a follow-up post to today’s on strategic thinking.

  6. Kismet says:

Are you certain that you don’t mean “fiend-filled summer”?

  7. Cupcake says:

Penny takes being a social butterfly to new heights. Also she may be more of a social Mac Truck than social butterfly.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  8. Connie Taylor says:

Looks like Tripp grew some extra legs with the photo of him and Penny, but the next picture you see Eko coming out from behind all the mayhem! I love how his eyes are so wide open. Easier to keep an eye on Penny

  9. It’s so nice she gets along with all sizes and has so much fun at the beach.

  10. coastingnz says:

fantastic captures of pups having a blast together – good friends, hard to beat

  11. fredrieka says:

I wish I liked water I would play with Penny

  12. Ogee says:

I dunno…Tripp’s eyes say that he might just have a little more crazy than even Penny! Takes one to know one. 🙂

  13. What fun! I love the expressions on their faces too – Penny certainly keeps everyone on their toes BUT it appears there are some who return the favor!

    Pam

  14. Totally love the fur and sand flying on the dog beach. Adorable.
