When I bring a friend to the dog beach for the first time, I often tell them to get ready to watch the “Air and Water Show.”  It’s fitting since Penny and Eko look like jets about to take off as they bound along the water.18.1

But this past weekend was the actual Air and Water Show in Chicago, and it’s one of my favorite events in the city. Watching the planes take over the skyline is mesmerizing, and I always make sure to find a good spot to watch. Montrose Dog beach has an unobstructed view, so I got to combine two of my favorite things and watch my four-legged fighter jets romp underneath the real ones.

The highlight of the show was/is/always will be the Blue Angels.

I still have trouble walking up the stairs without tripping, so I can’t comprehend how the Angels have the coordination to fly this close in formation

18.3

Not only that, they also kept buzzing the beach and city buildings at extremely close range.  It was an incredible show

Not to be outdone, Penny decided to round up her own squad on the beach.

Penny met our pal Cash for the first time and quickly recruited him to her squadron

But things got a bit hectic when we added a fourth pilot to the crew

What my Blue Dog Angels lacked in discipline, they certainly made up for with enthusiasm. After a long romp, we all laid on the beach and enjoyed watching the pros.

Not too shabby for a free show!

I love my on-call Air and Water Show each time I visit the beach, but nothing beats the real deal. If you ever have a chance to see the Blue Angels in action make sure you take it. Like a couple pups I know, the Angels know how to put on a show!

Comments for Chicago’s Air and Water (and Dog) Show

  1. Both shows are great, specially the one of the fourlegged artists :o)

  2. The Blue Angels are amazing, but your pack out-cutes them by a long shot – and that’s far more entertaining! 🙂

  3. fredrieka says:

wow Penny and Eko were not afraid of the loud air planes?

  4. Emmadog says:

Those dog formations can be tricky! We sometimes try to get three or more but it is tough. Penny, you catch air just like Bailie!

  5. Doozner says:

That trainer with the green leash looks awfully familiar. He’s become your Mister McFeely.

We had the Thunderbirds in our city this weekend for our air show. The closest I got was a fly over by some WW II planes and a couple of jets at the baseball game (Minor league) on Friday night (the T-bird pilots were in attendance though). How lucky that you can watch the show from the dog beach and not have to pay the huge fees to see it at the airport.

  7. OhMelvin says:

Penny taking flight is pretty incredible!

  8. Sage says:

We haven’t seen them in quite a while, but they are impressive! Glad that you had your own show to entertain during ‘intermissions’. 🙂

  9. Elyse says:

The Blue Angels once flew in formation over my office building. It was well worth showing up that day, I can assure you. But didn’t the noise scare the pups?

  10. Great pictures, I too love to watch the planes in the air. Every year at EAA time in Oshkosh we watch the planes practicing their formation at my trainers house which is next door to the Sheboygan airport where my trainer owns his own business airworthy aviation.

  11. We were not surprised that Penny broke formation! Excited enthusiasm and bitey-face will do that sometimes. What a fun day. Mom totally agrees about The Blue Angels, and air shows in general. They always impress.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  12. Alisa says:

I love how different their coats are. Eko’s is so golden and Penny’s is so red and coppery, beautiful! Samson and Ruby are identical in color and mask.
