We have had plenty of guests at my apartment, but until this past weekend all of them had been of the two-legged variety.  My friend Rachel had a wedding on Saturday, so I offered to watch her dog Riley for the weekend.  I know I want to get Eko a little sister sometime in the future, so this weekend was a good opportunity to see how he would handle sharing the apartment with another dog.

Rachel dropped Riley off Friday afternoon and it took a while for both pups to settle down.

Eko of course assumed the bed Rachel brought over was for him.  Riley obviously disagreed

While Eko puzzled as to why Rachel brought him such a small bed, Riley implored me to help her kick him off

Eventually the two agreed to a truce and settled down.  Not long after I felt a familiar stare – it felt even stronger than usual.

Double trouble. Eko taught Riley the strategy to get me out of my chair and the two of them made it quite clear that we should go outside

I was powerless to resist, so the three of us headed up to the dog beach for a romp.  It was a great way for Riley to run off some of the anxiety of Rachel leaving and it helped ensure that we would all get a good night’s sleep!

Riley also learned to hold onto her ball for dear life when at the beach with the Windy City Bandit

Before our trip to the beach the couch-sharing between Eko and Riley was a neutral affair, but when we got home the two hopped up together and curled up right next to each other.  They even left room for me! Rhodesian Ridgeback, pet adventure, marking our territory, dog blog,

They were sleeping comfortably until someone had to get up and take a photo – hence the “are you serious right now?” faces

The rest of the weekend was a success and Eko and Riley had a blast.  It was fun having an extra pup around – although I still have some work to do to master the art of two-dog-walking.  I’m not ready for another dog just yet, but I’m glad to know that Eko would enjoy the company!

Comments for Eko’s First Sleepover

  1. Great to see how they settled down together. Walking two dogs by yourself is an art! You need to get lots of practice and when Eko’s little sister turns up – train train train or get shirts and jumpers with longer sleeves 😉

They do make a cute pair! I’m glad a good time was had by all!

  3. Sage says:

There’s always some posturing in the beginning, but they certainly did well together!

You take the absolute best pics! I wish I had your skill.

  5. Riley looks like a little ‘mini-me’. Glad things went so well – why wouldn’t they, Eko is an awesome dog.

  6. Eko is a COMPLETE gentleman!! What a great houseguest Riley was! I can tell you all had a blast!!

  7. Steven/Buddy says:

Glad Eko had a great time and you were able to find out how it would be with another dog.
The fun part about having two dogs is, if the other dog is much younger, then Eko would help teach some of the do,s and dont’s. Also Eko would have a 24/7/365 playmate for life!
My older dog was really good at teaching Charlie when I got him at 9 weeks old, she was a mother to him and was best of friends.
Hopefully one day Eko will be teaching a new pup soon?

Oh, sleepovers are the most fun! I’m glad Eko had such a great time with Riley! And I bet all that playing and good company really helped take Riley’s mind off missing her mom 🙂

  9. Zena says:

When the two dogs are the same size, walking them isn’t so bad. But when you have one small and one large, the paces are hard to match and it makes it more of a challenge. Just another fact the Help didn’t think through in getting a big companion for me!

  10. Emmadog says:

Having friends over is so much fun! Once you adjust to having 2 dogs then you feel you are missing something when you have just one leash to hold on to. We each have our “side” that we walk on to keep from tangling and it works well. When we have a third dog, they assume the spot in the middle, and that is when dog walking starts to get tricky!

  11. Boomdeeadda says:

I can totally see how you would be powerless against the double ‘please’ look. Sweet Rachel is like a mini Eko. I would be putty in their paws too.

  12. We have friends who bring their dogs’ beds with them when they spend the night, and our dogs also make a beeline for those beds! What is up with that?

  13. Misaki says:

They sure look like they had a great time together 🙂

  14. Ahhh they get on so well 🙂

I love livernoses, I have two girls, Fiona is 10(black nose) and Lapsi is 2(liver). In a few weeks we will have a new baby boy who is also a liver. Your boy is soooo handsome and lucky to have you.
