Puppy Karma

Someone once told me Rhodesian Ridgebacks usually fall into one of two categories; “hunters” and “guardians.” I’m not sure how true the adage is overall but it certainly fits nicely with my two. No surprise Penny’s my “hunter” and Eko my “guardian.” Penny may be half Eko’s size, but what
Someone once told me Rhodesian Ridgebacks usually fall into one of two categories; “hunters” and “guardians.” I’m not sure how true the adage is overall but it certainly fits nicely with my two. No surprise Penny’s my “hunter” and Eko my “guardian.”Penny may be half Eko’s size, but what she lacks in size she certainly makes up for with tenacity. She’s a banner model for the “size of the fight in the dog” side of the old phrase.Β 25.1

Penny’s always on the prowl. She’s the first to run to the door, first to explore a new sound and definitely first in line when treats are around

25.2

My crazy hunter even tries to hunt treats straight out of Eko’s mouth! Brave? Foolish? A bit of both I’d say

As a guardian, Eko is stoic, even tempered and sticks close by even when off-leash. Penny knows Eko’s got a calmer disposition so she feels free to antagonize him at-will.

25.3

Most of the time Eko shrugs off Penny when she’s being annoying. But every so often he likes to remind her she should be more considerate of her elders

25.4

Penny thought she could swat Eko on the head without any consequences. As you can see in her face, she realized her miscalculation

25.5

“Hey, hey, I’m supposed to be the annoying one!”

25.6

“OK, OK, I GIVE UP!”

25.7

The only injury Penny sustained was to her pride

25.8

“Oh man, I got my butt kicked…”

Thankfully, Eko and Penny have neverΒ actually fought. Not even close. So that means when Eko puts Penny in her place I can sit back and giggle like a schoolboy. It’s little bit of funny karma coming full circle. And it’s a good reminder to Penny that sometimes the size of the dog in the fight does in fact count.Maybe Penny’s learned her lesson and will stop buggi…. sorry, I couldn’t finish that sentence with a straight face. We all need someone to help us keep our feet/paws on the ground. It’s nice Eko the guardian also guards against Penny’s ego getting too big!

Comments for Puppy Karma

  1. I know that feeling , Penny … when my damaged ego and my dignity are buried under a pillow :o) I sometimes wonder that they exactly know the limit … we can learn a lot from our dogs :o)

  2. Haha, well Eko does deserve to be top dog sometimes!

  3. KDKH says:

Eko’s got his work cut out for him!

  4. oh penny, feeling a little sorry for yourself?? Great photos.

  5. Donna says:

I love that picture with Penny hiding behind the pillow. My Axel will run to my bed and stick his head under the pillow every time he has to have “time out”. ( which is a minimum of 3 x a day).
I love all your pictures of the dogs though. Do you use your phone or another camera? Asking because every single picture I take of Axel…..turns out with him having red/orange eyes if I am taking a front facing me one. Also, what is the size difference between the two? Even though Eko is the bigger dog…he is the best big brother ever!

  6. They have the perfect relationship………human couples have a bit more trouble picking up the concepts Penny and Eko have EASILY learned in their relationship. Interesting. LOL

Hey Will. I can’t believe your pups weigh so little! I think that they need a bunch more treats! My boy RR is 145 pounds, and my girl RR is 100(don’t tell her I told you) pounds.

I love the hunter and the guardians thing, it works perfectly.

Has Eko started to fall in love with Penny now that’s she’s on heat or is he not interested?

  8. coastingnz says:

Great set of photos and oh so true. Same goes with our two – Ziggy the “hunter” and Nico the “guardian”. Ziggy knows though that when push comes to shove Nico is boss but also that he’ll have his back should the need arise.

  9. Kismet says:

I have 2 annoying twerps here.

  10. Hee, hee, just like you, I find myself giggling at the antics of your two pawsome pups. Penny is a girl after my heart and stoic Eko, you da man, dude!

  11. Emmadog says:

Trust me Eko, little sisters know how to push buttons and they enjoy pushing them! As a little sister myself, I never ever did that.

  12. T&S says:

Your dogs are like ours, so funny, thats why we stop by every evening to check whats up in paralel universe πŸ™‚ Only difference is that our female is the same size as our male ( she is quite big for a female)… and our male is still the boss… so the size doesnt matter πŸ™‚

Our male is a guard, its incredible how he hears everything around our house and checks visitors. He barks rearly, only with a good reason and our female joins him, altough she doesnt know why, just because they are a pack πŸ™‚
Our female is a hunter, obsessed with birds, cats, etc. so we have to be careful with her.
I think they will never walk off leash near a road, just because of her obsession and my fear of them getting hurt, so I am sometimes jelaous of all smart and well raised dogs who walk off leash with their owners πŸ™‚

Did you manage off leash walking near a road with Eko and Penny (not sure about regulations in your city on walking a dog off leash, so maybe its a wrong question from start)?

  13. I think they balance each other out perfectly!

  14. Mags says:

    Hugs and nose kisses

  15. dashlilly says:

    Oh Penny Penny Penny….

  16. Marcela says:

Lol. Penny sounds a lot like Alex. They are so funny:-)

  17. You take the most amazing photos of those two. I love their camaraderie.

  18. fredrieka says:

Oh well hunting for treats is the best I have two sisters we call it search and destroy when our pawless parents throw food in the front yard we go search and destroy, something to do on a winters day when bored.

  19. Oh poor Penny! Buddy is always putting Basil in his place and he looks dejected and sorry for himself for a good hour afterwards. And then he’s right back to making mischief!
