[VIDEO] Puppy Proofing Preparation

A comfortable, well-trained adult dog is a luxury that’s made me quite thoughtless. Wires and chargers litter the floor, tasty shoes are left out and I often leave without closing any bedroom/bathroom doors. But I haven’t forgot the havoc Eko wrought as a puppy. If destruction is an art, puppies
If destruction is an art, puppies are all little da Vincis. With that in mind, I’m trying to get back to some of the good habits that will help set the pup up for success. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rOhNmQ-o0g

Love that destruction part! We did not prepare ahead of time and really until Bailie was about 9 months old, she didn’t destroy anything. Day 1 she went after shoes and got an antler in exchange. Antlers really saved us! They have been like a doggie pacifier. She seems to be ending her month of destruction and the only ruined items have been her very own toys. Every dog/puppy is different, so it is always a surprise! You will be fine, exercise and keeping those little ones worn out is the biggest key to success! A sleeping pup is really adorable! Have a great weekend, enjoy the peace…it will be ending soon!

  3. Ohhhh we cannot wait!!!

Smart thinking. I just called the invisible fence guys …

Looks like you are getting on top of the puppy training and being ready for Eko’s little sister. We bet that Eko is going to be a big help to you in teaching her good habits. We know she is coming to a super-duper home and what a lucky pup she is. Hugs and nose kisses

Puppy Eko always surprises me by just how adorable he was!! 🙂 I loved him going back in the crate as an adult too!

You’re lucky Eko is such a well behaved adult, Kasper is almost 4 years old and still can’t be trusted when left alone in a room for more than a few minutes! Anything that can be shredded will be, and don’t even get me started on Zoey… XD

We kept a really close eye on Zoey when she was a puppy, so she never actually managed to destroy anything…and when we weren’t there to supervise, away in the crate she went with an antler or tasty Kong!

  7. It looks like you’re ready, but don’t forget to get into the habit of pushing in your chair when you get up from the table. When Mom first brought me home, I wasn’t a puppy, but I was naughty like a puppy, since I never had a home before. Mom left her chair out when she went into the kitchen and I jumped on the chair and took one of her pills that she left on the table. We had to call ASPCA poison control and induce vomiting. Not fun.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  8. Experience is such a good teacher isn’t it! Bet little sis will have a few tricks up her – um – paws when she arrives though 🙂 Love seeing Mr Eko try to settle back into his old crate, that “- Dad it’s shrunk!” look on his face. I’m holding out to see what kind of a dog little sis will be – a miniature version of her brother or someone else altogether……

What a gorgeous video. It looks like you’ve got things covered, it was like a trip down memory lane for me and I am not sure I’ remember most of those things before it’s too late! So exciting! I bet you can’t wait!
Hugs, Carrie (Myfie, Ellie and Millie) x

  10. I don’t think I have the energy for a puppy. Good luck with that! 😉 Excited to see what puppy you will be getting!

  11. We always said that we should have socialized Cody more as a pup. He would jump all over everyone when they would come in. Luckily, we fixed that. But socialization would have helped greatly. And an obedience class would have been appreciated, now that I think about it. Cody and the family probably could have used it.

    Getting excited now!

My Ridgeback Chase is same age as Eko. His behavior is the same and he even opens the door knob just like Eko.He too leaves things alone now but was a bundle of destruction till age 2. Good luck with the little one.
