Starting off the weekend at Chicago's hottest dog spa

Rising lake waters in combination with punishing storms has left some sections of the walkway as cratered as the moon. People have moved on to enjoy other areas of the lakefront, but we've discovered the newly formed tidal pools make for excellent Ridgeback respite

Also, THANK YOU to everyone who pitched in to support Ridgeback Rescue's calendar fundraiser! There's still time for everyone else to support a great organization AND get your pup's IG account promoted right here. I'll repost the details in my stories today. I don't normally recommend buying dog toys, but when I do, they're the dumbest ones. I just found this old video of Eko and Penny with this silly $15 jumping ball and have been grinning ever since

We got so much dopey fun out of ours, so if you want to get some hilarious video of your prey motivated pup I'll put the link up in today's stories

I enjoyed the week off, but my family can only take so much of me so it's good to be back rambling on the internet.

I'm delighted to report that with Penny's stitches out, Zero's anxiety finally settled down and his blues are gone

All Zero wanted was to be with her, and now that he's relaxed Penny is once again content for the big lug to be her blanket. It's good to have these two back at ease, too

Hope you guys enjoyed your moment of respite. In short order we'll test the truism about whether absence really makes the heart grow fonder!

Before I had the results from Penny's biopsy my imagination ran wild, conjuring up everything that might be wrong. A vain attempt to peak into the future in order to control it. A sprawling vision of cascading consequences and fears unfolding into infinity

Enter Mayhem. Her paw hooked around my arm, her stare and her message as uncompromising as ever. "Let's go."

Like my imagination, Penny ran wild. Except instead of fear, she conjured up everything that is right in this world - joy, love and living in the moment. A rollicking performance which demonstrated that consequences are overrated. Every moment lived in fear of the lions in our lives is a moment stolen from the thrill of chasing after them

One day that fear is inevitably realized for all of us who give ourselves to a dog. But I am grateful for Penny's reminder to accept that terrible truth without ever being guided by it

So per Dr. Mayhem's orders I'm going to turn off my phone for a week and spend some family time in the moment. I'll catch up with everyone once we get back to our regularly scheduled nonsense

It's also proof that the only reason dogs aren't eligible for acting awards is because male Ridgebacks would win best actor in a drama every year

Our past week summed up in three photos. Overbearing concern, calamitous response and hasty retreat. Rinse and repeat!

Fortunately, Penny's stitches are due to come out today and we have an in-house surgeon who says she won't bill me too much for the work. Then it's off to give the area a good cleaning to remove any lingering scent and hopefully peace (or our normal approximation therof) will return!

If this doesn't calm Zero down then my plan is to contact the zoo and ask if they're willing to sell me a few elephant tranquilizer darts

Yesterday was easily one of my favorite days here. One of the largest outpourings of support we've ever received and it was all for a dog that nothing happened to!

.

And truly, I couldn't imagine a more fitting tribute to these dogs and their bond. Penny, bloodied, eschewing all sympathy and pity while Zero wails and moans for attention

If you've ever glossed over the description of Ridgebacks being sensitive dogs, I've got about 1000 messages in my inbox which can certify the claim. Zero will be pleased to know he's not alone in his melodrama. And Penny? Well, Penny will be pleased to share her stitches with the next dog who even thinks about worrying over her.

No matter what, with Miss Mayhem, worrying only goes in one direction - towards whoever she sets her sights on!

Thanks again for all the kind and funny messages, they really made my day
